How San Diego does it.

=v= I just posted five photos to my flickr stream, showing how
two northern San Diego county train lines handle bikes on board.
For a limited time, this is the handiest URL to get there:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/jym
But these URLs will be more persistent:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/jym/tags/coaster
http://www.flickr.com/photos/jym/tags/sprinter
=v= The Coaster is of interest because it's a Bombardier, just
like Caltrain's newer cars. They only have space for 12 bikes,
freed up with seats that fold up, but this is on every car;
so they potentially have 60-72 bike parking spots per train.
(I also saw the MetroLink, which runs from San Diego all the
way up to San Luis Obispo. They have Bombardiers with the
same configuration.)
=v= I don't know what their deal is in terms of demand, dwell
time, etc. But it's certainly food for thought.
