Fwd: Congested Priorities at CalTrain  Jym Dyer
 Aug 12, 2008 16:09 PDT

=v= There was a recent Caltrain story in the _Examiner_.

Caltrain covets cyclists' cash:

There's some commentary below that Andy Thornley sent to another
public list.

The Examiner kind of muffed this story, which wouldn't be an
enormous surprise except that Ms. Aparton is one of their
sharper reporters (just recently joined their staff) and she was
there at the JPB meeting listening to the lame presentation from
Caltrain staff about their bike parking plan and the public
comment from 19 eloquent cyclist-customers calling on Caltrain
to stop screwing around and fix their bikes on board service.

The actual story is that Caltrain claims they can't do any
better on providing consistent bike bring-along capacity or
growing that capacity into the future, and advocates (led very
actively and energetically by SFBC members with staff support
[meaning me]) have been pushing back pretty hard, good
(cross-county) organizing, good research, good lobbying. You can
get caught up on the saga by reading our comments on the
as-yet-unreleased Caltrain Draft Bicycle Master Plan:

http://sfbike.org/download/actions/caltrain/SFBC_Caltrain_BMP_20080703.pdf

and review the advocates' "shadow" Bike Master Plan, pulled
together by Dr. Shirley Johnson with her band of expert
amateurs:

http://www.sfbike.org/download/actions/caltrain/Draft_Plan_Bikes_on_Caltrain_SFBC.pdf

For completeness' sake, and in case anyone wants to get involved, the
campaign page is here:

http://sfbike.org/?caltrain_bob

At least contact the SF reps on the Caltrain board, Nat Ford, Jose
Cisneros, and Sean Elsbernd, and let them know they need to crack
down on their (Caltrain) staff's aimlessness and get bikes on board
working right . . .
