A bicyclist who crossed the railroad tracks when the gates were
down was hit by a Caltrain south of the San Jose Diridon Station
on Friday afternoon and died a few hours later.
A Caltrain spokeswoman said the incident appears to have
been an accident.
Two Gunn High School students committed suicide recently
on the Caltrain tracks in Palo Alto -- one just this week.
Another student from the same school tried to do the same
Thursday night, but his mother stopped him just in time.
The bicyclist, who has not been identified pending notification
of his family, was in his 30s, said Christine Dunn, the Caltrain
spokeswoman. The 4:10 p.m. incident occurred after the gates at
the Auzerais Street crossing had been lowered for an Altamont
Commuter Express train traveling northbound, she said. After the
ACE train went by the man went around the lowered gates into the
path of the unoccupied Caltrain, which was traveling southbound
about 35 mph.
"It looks as though he waited for the ACE train and then did
not look in the other direction," Dunn said. "Trains are not
as noisy as you think, so you should never ever go around a
lowered gate."
The man was taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, where
he died of his injuries. One train was canceled as a result
of the accident and four were delayed.
