The federal government on Wednesday awarded Caltrain and
SamTrans with millions of dollars from President Barack
Obama's stimulus plan, a local congresswoman announced.
Caltrain will receive $9 million for track, bridge, signal
and bicycle improvements throughout Santa Clara, San Mateo
and San Francisco counties.
The San Mateo County Transit District, which operates
SamTrans buses, will get $7 million to purchase buses and
for preventative maintenance.
Both transit agencies are facing budget problems but stimulus
funds are designed for capital improvement projects -- not
for balancing expense sheets.
The grants were announced by U.S. Rep. Anna Eshoo, D-Palo Alto,
who voted for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act earlier
this year. The federal government has begun awarding money from
the stimulus bill to local governments.
"These grants will help keep our trains and buses running
safely and on time, while creating new jobs and investing in
our regional economy," Eshoo said in a statement.
