Subject: Action alert - Caltrain still bumping cyclists, plus more

| | Hello Caltrain Bike Passengers and Supporters,
Contents:
1. Please report bumps
2. Every bike needs a destination tag
3. Web designer needed
4. Statistician needed
5. Bike capacity update
6. Thank you
PLEASE REPORT BUMPS
Some people are saying that bumping isnıt happening anymore thanks to the
recent increase in bike capacity, so your bump reports are very important!
In September alone, over 100 cyclists were reported bumped, but we know
there is under-reporting. For example, last Wednesday train 267 bumped 12
cyclists at Redwood City, but only one reported. Seven more cyclists were
bumped at San Mateo, but only one reported. Cyclists were surely bumped at
Palo Alto and other stations, but we received no reports.
Please help and report all bumps! Hereıs what to do:
Use the handy email link near the top of our web page at
http://www.sfbike.org/caltrain_bob to report the following:
| | > number of bumped cyclists (even if you are not one of them),
> day,
> station,
> train number or time plus travel direction, and
> any additional information such as how getting bumped affected your day.
|
We are compiling bump reports to help Caltrain improve its service. For a
sneak preview at the results so far, the most bumps occurred at the
following stations in descending order:
1. 4th & King
2. Palo Alto
3. 22nd Street
4. Mountain View
5. Hillsdale
It is alarming that the station with the most reported bumps is 4th &
King, the start of the line. With so many empty seats on the trains,
Caltrain bumping cyclists before the train even leaves the station is a
very serious problem. Please spread the word and report bumps, so we can
help Caltrain solve this problem!
EVERY BIKE NEEDS A DESTINATION TAG
Please mark your bike with its destination, so other cyclists donıt block
your bike in. Caltrain provides free yellow vinyl destination tags at 4th
& King and San Jose Diridon station ticket windows. If your trip doesnıt
take you to these stations or the ticket window is closed, you can pick up
a free green destination tag compliments of the SFBC at the following
locations, while supplies last:
| | > Warm Planet Bikes, 4th & Townsend St at the SF Caltrain station
> Bike Station Palo Alto at the Palo Alto Caltrain station
> Summit Bikes, 1031 California Drive, Burlingame
> Chain Reaction Bicycles, 1451 El Camino Real, Redwood City
> SFBC Office, 995 Market St, Ste 1550, SF
|
Please write your destination on the tag with a Sharpie or other marker,
so itıs easier to read.
WEB DESIGNER NEEDED
Our web page could use a face lift, so if you or someone you know has web
experience and would like to volunteer to help a worthy cause, please
reply to this email.
STATISTICIAN NEEDED
We are planning a bump count study, and we would like a statistician to
evaluate our study design for statistical significance. If you or someone
you know would like to volunteer an hour or so for consultation, please
reply to this email.
BIKE CAPACITY UPDATE
Caltrain plans to convert three Bombardier non-bike cars to bike cars by
the end of October, so all five Bombardier train sets will run with two
bike cars. Then all Bombardier trains will carry 48 bikes - remember when
they used to carry only 16 bikes? Two bike cars on every Bombardier train
will be a huge improvement, and we thank Caltrain for listening to its
loyal customers. Next we need consistency in bike capacity on all trains,
so we can all know what to expect when a train pulls up. See our proposal
here: http://www.sfbike.org/caltrain_bob_propose
THANK YOU
Without your unwavering support and dedication to green commuting, none of
the service improvements weıre seeing would have happened. A giant THANK
YOU to all of you, especially those who report bumps. :)
More bikes, no bumps,
Shirley Johnson

Please forward to other cyclists and anyone who cares about bicycle
commuting.
