David,
I for one look forward to being able to read the list at work.
It's interesting that I manage two other lists using topica and these
attract no advertising, but certainly do not have the same volume of
traffic. I therefore surmise that COG-L is a victim of its own success.
Cheers
Alastair

Greetings. In the past I have raised the issue of moving our list from
its current host Topica.com to elsewhere. I have consulted you and are
grateful for the advice list members have given. In consultation with
COG's Committee of Management and David Cook and Paul Fennell who are
heavily engaged in upgrading COG's internet presence, I will soon move
the list.
Why?
- to get rid of the advertisements in our messages
- to have a hosting company that is not blacklisted by some govt
agencies and ISPs owing to its (unjustified) reputation of facilitating
spammers
- to get a better message archive
- to consolidate all COG's internet activities under the umbrella of our
new hosting company, Quadra.com.au.
The new list will be called 'canberrabirds' as now; the nickname 'cog-l'
will be dropped.
The list address, for posting messages, will be
canberr-@canberrabirds.org.au. (As you already know, COG's new web
address is www.canberrabirds.org.au.)
The list management software we will use is called ezmlm: 'ez mailing
list manager'. Anyone wanting to read up on it can find the user manual
at http://ezmlm.sericyb.com.au/ezman-0.32/index.html, but I stress that
there is no need at all to do so. The mailing list software is
excellent; you will find it very user friendly. It operates on a
self-help manner, i.e. you can manage your subscription yourself through
email.
Thanks to the half-dozen or so list members who have piloted the new
arrangements.
So ... I will:
- move all subscribers to the new list soon
- advise you when this has been done
- advise you how to manage your own subscription
- keep cog-l going at the old topica address (canberr-@topica.com)
for a little while in parallel with canberr-@canberrabirds.org.au
- and then unsubscribe you from the topica list so that you will only
receive messages from the new list.
I will send one test message to the new list once the list is
established. You should simply ignore that message.
Please contact me directly at david.m-@myrealbox.com if you wish
to discuss this, rather than by posting a message to the whole list.
I hope everyone is OK about this, and let's hope the transition is a
smooth one!
Best wishes - David
