Hi John,
I hope my comments about grazing haven't upset you. While accepting that there have been improvements in both graziers attitude to their country and the welfare of their stock I think there is still room for improvement on both counts. We are in the midst of the worst drought white Australians have seen and unfortunately its going to have a devastating effect on the landscape (and birds) throughout eastern Australia. I've just come back from a few days at the beach. On 1/7 a local dairyman rang the radio station to say that june was the first month in 32 years that he had recorded no rainfall. Regular dust storms on the Monaro these days. Things will get worse.
The story at Bindegolly is that the Bulloo Shire has put up the "no camping" sign to encourage use of their new campground at Thargominda. The traditional camp area is on the stock route not leasehold. They have given assurances that they will not prosecute genuine birdwatchers. All this was got from talking to a locally based ranger who was watching over aerial goat shooting in the park when we arrived. I imagine there are similar signs at other camping sites (fishing holes etc).
I didn't see any sign at Noccundra on William Rv.
I had several people ask about Bowra. I hope it becomes better known down this way. I really enjoyed my time there.
Wish I could go to the channel country with you. Geoff Dabb is planning a trip to Welford soon.
Best Wishes
Tom
