A BASRA BLUE

BASRA to Carlisle was how far Blues fan Martyn Haworth was prepared to
travel to watch his beloved team win a match.

The 20-year-old signaller has been stationed in Iraq with the Royal Signals
since October and has been pining for Carlisle United - but he was home for
their clash with Wrexham on Saturday.

One wall of his Army quarters is covered in United scarves and shirts and
every week he is away from his native city, he goes through the torture of
following a game on the internet.

Fellow soldiers in Iraq don't understand his obsession with the team. He
said: "My friends on camp think I am a bit stupid, they all support bigger
teams. It has been made worse for me because Carlisle have been winning.

"They kept losing earlier in the season when I was here to see the matches.
I started to think I was a jinx on the team when they went one-down on
Saturday."

Earlier this year, he bet a Nottingham Forest fan on the camp £5 that
Carlisle would be playing a league above them next year and amazingly the
odds seem to be in his favour now.

The former Harraby schoolboy featured in the News & Star aged 14 after
travelling 15,000 miles during one Blues season when he did not miss a
single match. He gave up dreams of becoming a footballer when he realised he
did not have the talent and decided on a career in the Army.

After Saturday's game, he spent more than £100 in the club shop on shirts to
take back to Iraq when he flies back tomorrow.
