Thanks to an alert to check out the new 2008 US Census Bureau's American
Community Survey data, I dug into it and found very positive results for
the city of Santa Barbara, California.
Looking at the US census data from 1990 & 2000, & comparing them with the
2008 American Community Survey data, Santa Barbara has had a 8% decrease
in car/van commuting to work over those 18 years. Instead of driving, 4%
more are working from home, 2% more are biking & 1.5% more are walking.
We now have 5.2% biking to work, & 7.3% walking to work. And I wouldn't
be surprised if those numbers go up farther in 2009.
I presented the new data to our City Council yesterday, including an info
sheet that's now posted online at:
http://www.sbbike.org/docs/SB-commute.pdf
I know that our improvements reflect what's happening all over the US, &
couldn't be happier with the healthy trend. For those in other
communities, you might wish to publicize any improvements as published by
the Census Bureau (it's at http://factfinder.census.gov ).
