Bicyclist killed by AC transit bus  Bob Shanteau
 Nov 05, 2009 22:43 PST

It looks like the bicyclist had been drinking, was riding at night
without lights or reflectors, and cut in front of the bus. I suppose the
lesson here is how important it is to teach people that riding a bicycle
should not be taken lightly and that we need to work on getting more
bicycle education (and better enforcement).

HAYWARD — A bicyclist was struck and killed by an AC Transit bus just
hours before a fatal train accident Monday night.

The first incident was reported at 6:44 p.m., when a man riding a
bicycle near Huntwood Avenue and Lustig Court was hit by a bus on the 91
line, fire officials said.

Arriving rescue workers determined the 37-year-old man was already dead.
As of Tuesday evening, his identity had not been released. He is
believed to be a Hayward resident, police said.

The driver of the bus told investigators that the bicyclist came out of
nowhere and crossed directly in front of him, cutting diagonally across
the traffic lanes. The bus had substantial damage to the windshield, but
none of the four passengers was injured.

According to a Hayward police statement, "the preliminary investigation
suggests that the bicyclist was possibly under the influence of alcohol
at the time of the collision."

The bicycle did not have any lights or reflectors, and the rider was not
wearing reflective or safety gear, police said.

The bus driver will be placed on paid leave and tested for drugs and
alcohol as part of routine procedure. Witnesses told police the driver
was not doing anything distracting when the crash occurred.

In the second accident, the Fire Department responded around 9:30 p.m.
to the area around W. Winton Avenue and Alexander Court following
reports of a pedestrian hit by a train. ...
