Re: hiring a perl programmer  Andy Lester

One of the requirements is at least 2 years of PERL programming
experience. Do you have any suggestions as to a quick program it would be
appropriate to ask the candidate to write to verify their PERL knowledge?

How about something that actually relates to the job that they'll be
doing? If it's a web development shop, then say "Whip up a program that
sends feedback to an email address", or something similar. If it's some
big number-crunching or financial place, there's bound to be something
similar that can be done.

As always, I'll beat the drum for "Ask The Headhunter" as a marvelous
tool for hiring manager and job applicant alike.

Finally, if your buddy would like to talk voice about this, I'd be glad
to chat. I've hired a number of Perl folks in the past few years, and
I'll be hiring another one soon.
