"Listeners are just a byproduct of advertisers"
Incredible conversation on the phone betweek Mike who runs radio morning
show on 97.1 in Dallas,TX and one of his bosses who is in charge of
advertising. The topic was that radio broadcast from Mexico for the show
was cancelled because Mike's boss was going to Mexico instead to mingle
with some of the clients who pay big bucks for advertising.
Here is the jest of it.
"What do you mean? Are you kidding me?" - Mike was becoming irritated
with his boss.
"What is there to kid you about, Mike?. You are not going to Mexico. I
am going because I need to mingle with some clients" was a response from
Skeeter. His tone was demanding, authoritative and yet quite calm.
Boss - "But we've been telling our listeners for the last two weeks that
we are going to be broadcasting the show from Mexico. There are hundreds
of thousands of people that listen to our station and now you are going
to take a couple of clients to Mexico instead? What do you want me to
say on the air to our listeners?"
Boss - "Don't say anything. Just stop talking about Mexico"
Mike - " So you are telling me that it's more important for you to take
a couple of clients so you can mingle with them then us broadcasting the
show to hundreds of thousands of listeners?"
Boss - "And advertisers pay hundreds of thousands of dollars. Listeners
are just a byproduct of advertisers. Listeners don't pay you your
salary. Advertisers do. It's about the money, Mike. How did you get your
car? How pays for your house? Adervtisers do. That's why you're not
going to Mexico. I am going with clients. You need to understand that I
need to be there to bring in the money. "
Mike - "No. You don't understand. Without listeners there would not be
advertisers. People listen to my show. Advertisers know that and that's
why they buy ads at the radio station. You've got it all wrong."
I cought this on the way to work. Mike recorded this conversation on his
home answering machine when his boss called him to cancel his trip to
Mexico and then played it on the radio so the hundreds of thousands of
people can listen. I think Mike will be fired.
There was some more but the above interaction was incredible. The Matrix
all over again as Doc says. The guys who run the radio station consider
us coppertops.
