Mike,
Excellent post. Thank you.
I am guilty of idealism.
The sun has not set on my aspirations.
The poets and artists of this planet will not be quiet.
"Democracy is Coming to the USA." It's coming from unlikely places: South
Africa, Ghana, Poland, Chile or any other forgotten nation on this planet.
The new mythology is being born. Small pieces loosely joined may not be so
loosely hyperlinked. The butterflies of the world are hyperlinking to each
other's voices and writing themsevels into existence. That existence persists
because it's being indexed and cached and linked to on thousands of servers. I
wonder what the tipping point will look like.

"Ring the bells that still can ring / Forget your perfect offering /
There is a crack, a crack in everything / That's how the light gets in.
/ That's how the light gets in. / That's how the light gets in."
Much as I enjoyed Marek's spontaneous interpretation of this song, I’m
inclined to think, “Yeah, that good ol’ Liberty Bell, huh.”
As for the crack rendering it an imperfect, somehow human exemplar of
American “voice”, I fear the sun - taking with it any natural light
capable of illumining the dark hearts now plying their deadly trade in
double-dealing duplicity in the name of the ‘Greatest Democracy on
Earth’ – has long since set on the aspirations it once articulated.
As a result, on 'Ten New Songs', we get the following plea from Cohen,
who just "can't buy it anymore":
"For the innermost decision / That we cannot but obey / For what’s left
of our religion / I lift my voice and pray: / May the lights in The Land
of Plenty / Shine on the truth some day."
I hope this prayer is answered. Otherwise, with sadness, I believe the
lights in The Land of Plenty will be forever trained on an area called
Ground Zero.

PS. Hey Marek..I need a little of your idealism right now...
|
I listened to Leonard Cohen last night and this is what he said:
"And I really don't know who sent me,
To raise my voice and say:
May the lights in the Land of Plenty
Shine on the truth some day."
Yeah, I live in the Land of Plenty and the lights shine all night long.
24-7
they say. They shine so fucking bright that the Moon and The Stars can't
even compete with the illuminated Gas Stations, Convenience Stores,
Billboards on the Highway and Downtown 50 Story Corporate Towers. These
are
our New Constellations of life - No longer will one ever need to raise
one's
eyes and look up there into the darkness and marvel at the twinklingness
of
far-aways.
"Mister Cohen, I don't care who sent you. You are not welcomed here and
there is no need to raise your Voice and Say anything else. This is the
digital age and the City Lights are the truth right now and not some
day" -
but he just looked at me for what seemed like an eternity and said
"Don't
you get it Marek? -There is a crack in everything. That's how the light
gets
in."
- "What is this 'crack in everything', Leonard? What kind of truth are
you
pushing on me here? - The cracks are not needed. Everything is polished
now - you'd better focus on getting that new Lexus SC 430. You'll shine
in
that brand new automobile. O yeah, that baby will get you laid. It's so
smooth. Trust me"
And Leonard just turned away and left, and I stood there looking at the
City
and wondered what those Lights of the Land of Plenty are shining on?
What do
they illuminate? And where the fuck is the Crack to let the light in?
I jumped into my car and drove to the brightly lit intersection with 2
gas
stations and an all night Grocery store. I stood there in the parking
lot
and I wanted to merge with the bright lights and I wanted them to shine
the
truth on me.
I started by merging with all the light bulbs in the parking lot and I
noticed, not too far away, there was some guy standing next to his car.
He
too was looking at the light bulbs. I think he was merging with them
just
like I was attempting to. I felt embarrassed. How fucking wacko of me to
be
standing here freezing my ass off getting caught gazing at light bulbs.
I glanced at him and he looked into my eyes and my soul cracked wide
open
and the light got in. I think it came from his cracked soul. Maybe he
too
was talking to Leonard Cohen that night -- And the Lights in the Land of
Plenty? O yeah, they too cracked wide open and were shining their
fucking
bright bulbs on the cracked souls.
I thank you for your attention
Marek J
