Marek,
Did you smoke a little too much pot when you received the
"illuminations" above
or did you just hit a time warp that was bouncing you mentally back to
the 80s???

I took his statements as part tounge in cheek - more like demonstration of
irony, in a sense. It has the ring of truth (or experience) but is
presented in such a way as to encourage the reader to think it absurd.
Satire, I guess.

I couldn't really follow what you were saying after this. I understood the
part about the fat Americans, but once you got to creating partnership based
orginizations, I kind of lost the thread of what was going on. What
partners? Corporations forming alliances? world ecology means nature and
mother earth, right?
I guess the only trust I have for companies right now is that they'll go out
of business within six months. If my stock options qualified me as a
partner, I guess I don't feel so bad. Some folks lost a lot of money in the
companies I have worked for. Since I never had any real money to lose to
begin with, I guess I made out ok.
I think I understood your third point, though, about gossip being the weapon
of the unempowered, and about having to be honest in communications.
In my life lately I've been trying to be more honest. I'm sure we all know
what it's like to be actively DIS-honest, but there are more subtle
omissions and white lies that happen on a daily basis (especially in the
workplace) that sometimes cause more problems than solve. For instance, a
couple weeks ago I told my employer I would quit if they made me send spam
to random people on the internet. I don't think they're going to involve me
in their direct email marketing campaign at this point, but it was an
interesting discussion nonetheless.
I've worked too hard and been involved too long with all of this to demean
myself (and everyone else who has contributed to computing and the Internet)
in that way.

1. There is no longer a single trajectory or factor pattern that would
allow to use the term
"Corporations" in the given form without creating a false
over-simplification (like in eg:
Americans are fat, Russians are alcoholics, etc.). The current
developmental state of the
world ecology actually forces corporations to become more
entrepreneurial (in real, not
just per ad), to create partnership based organizations, to replace
order with trust, and
to embrace freedom and diversity as a competitive (human) asset. A
few (even SUNCOR
should be considered here) are starting to base their whole
strategic long-term-development
on value systems that are governed by evolutionary principles that
other companies would
consider unacceptable (sometimes because their leadership is just
too stupid or greedy).
2. The Perfect Employee is an urban myth nobody really believes in (not
even Kodak's HR
department). As workplaces and associated requirements follow the
path of increased
organizational plasticity - because of the adaptivity-needs created
by the vast changing
conditions of global market ecologies - individual empowerment and
leadership replaces
management (slowly but inevitably). In addition, many "Knowledge
Workers" (sorry for
riding this dead horse...) will find themselves as independent
multi-employed telecommuters
and "fixed asset cultures" with labeled cubicles will exist mainly
in the paranoid fantasies of
semi-political claustrophobics.
3. In the sub-cultures of the existing hierarchical Dinosaurs and their
challengers, gossip also
contains the element of reactionary aggressive compensation for both
the disempowerment
and suffering on the one hand, and the individuals' frustration with
its own inability to grow
beyond the status quo and simply become an adult. Some of the
practical gossip in businesses
resembles the immature acting out of pre-schoolers more than it
displays self-conscious (!!!),
responsible, and fully aware human beings who can find any solution
within the framework
of an open, fair, and educated dialogue. Ground rule: Look very
carefully into the mirror and
assess your rules of judgment before you call anybody ugly. Then
suspend your judgment
and start listening.....
The change is already underway and it is and will be incremental or
fundamental or both, as always....
