Dear Jan and all,
You ask about the effectiveness of phone banking. I've never worked in a
political campaign like this before, so I really do not know how well this
works, but I need to respect the opinion of experts who do this for a living
and they are supposed to be the best in the field. We only call the list
profiled to be "undecided" (mixed party households, moderate
environmentalists, etc.). These are all registered and likely absentee
voters. We reached only a fraction of those we call but, apparently, that
makes a difference. The Tramutola people say that this is the most effective
tool, although not the only one.
Regarding the forum: I'm totally confused but, again, I defer to the experts.
The importance of a forum is the coverage it receives. Probably none or
negative from Planet Wendy; not sure if The Indy will cover it.
Regarding full page ads: In what paper? The L.A. Times? The Daily Sound?
The Independent will come full force for D next Thursday (or the next) with
cover page and all. At Nick's request I wrote a 1,000-word editorial for
"Independent Voices", It took quite an effort to make it engaging and
readable: usually proposition editorials are the worst, and this one is
complicated enough to put anyone to sleep. I think I managed to keep the
interest going; you will be the judges of that.
The campaign is gaining momentum with business money. Apparently we are not
doing great with the enviro-friendly donors, but we will have enough to make
some kind of splash. It is important that in these last few weeks we all
pull together and remain focused. Do not get distracted by the opposition.
If we are not careful we can lose this election not because the opposition
is strong but rather our supporters become distracted.
Have a great weekend, and let's figure our what to do about COAST's FORUM ON
MEASURE D.

Alex,
Phone banking...who does it reach? Many people (Roger concurred) don't take
telemarketing calls...
Where is Brian Robertson, the pr person? He was going to approach corporates
to get money to do full page ads for Measure D. The forum can only help, not
hinder, if the PR on it BEFORE it takes place and AFTER gets to the right
place (papers, TV).
Bottom line is, in spite of north resistance to the rail, etc, the public
who votes needs to know the nuts and bolts.
Roger says we need a photo of Centano and Cabajal arm and arm on full page
ads...
