This from Cliff Kindy about a lesser known CPT project here in the
states. The building of a home for Maizie Schenandoah could be joined by
anyone, you don't have to be a CPTer. Contact Cliff at the # given if you
are interested in this. If you need more information about the situation
on the Oneida Territory in Western NY please contact me, I'll be glad to
fill you in.

The traditional Oneida on the 32 acre territory in central New York are
hoping to soon start to build a home for clan mother, Maizie
Schenadoah. The first fifteen inspections by the Oneida Nation, Inc.
(check the difference in the CPT Annual Report) led to fourteen
demolitions. CPT was on the territory in July when the next and last
five
homes were inspected. A deadline for families to move and homes to be
demolished was set by the Oneida, Inc. court for August 20, but an appeal
to halt the demolitions is still making its way through the tribal
court. That process has led to the dropping of an appeal in the federal
courts, though another appeal has been filed in a different federal
district. But folks expect the demolition pressure to pick up again
soon. The building of Maizie's home is a creative nonviolent way to take
the initiative away from the destruction process. You are each invited
to
join in that building action, which could also include other homes if the
money is available.
The building will be preceded by the planting of the Tree of Peace on the
territory. The last time the tree was planted, it was uprooted by the
Oneida corporation. This time it will be the signal to begin building
Maizie's new home. High visibility will be an important deterrent to
another demolition. There is yet no date set for the planting and
building, but it could be as early as the second week in September. The
families have kept a strong spirit and are quite hopeful that the
situation
can change.
Twelve CPTers have been part of the occasional CPT presence on the
territory over the past 17 months. It would be great to have others of
you! Four have been there again in the past week. If you can bring a
tent, tools, and some food staples, it would help the building process
move
smoothly.
If you have questions or are making plans to come for the building,
please
reply to kin-@cpt.org or call (260)982-2971.
