CHRISTIANS IN THE HOLY LAND
A reception for Janet Lahr Lewis
Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ
Saturday evening, October 2 7:00 pm
Sunday morning, October 3 9:30 am
Janet Lahr Lewis works at the Sabeel Ecumenical Palestinian Liberation
Theology Center in Jerusalem. Her assignment is through the Global
Missions Board of the United Methodist Church. The Sabeel Center runs
interfaith programs for Arab Palestinian Christians and Muslims -
clergy, lay, women, and children. It also is one of the most prolific
theological interpreters of the plight of Palestinian Christians for the
West. Sabeel's director, Father Naim Ateek, an Anglican priest, writes
continually about the issues concerning Palestinian Christians from a
liberation theology perspective. His best known book is "Justice and
Only Justice."
The Christian communities in the Holy Land are oppressed and
beleaguered. They are facing critical times, including their possible
extinction within our lifetimes. Join us to hear the story of one
organization who is speaking out for human rights, for justice, and for
non-violent solutions to the complex problems facing our sisters and
brothers in the Christian Holy Land.
At the reception on the evening of October 2, Janet will speak briefly
about the Apartheid Wall's effect upon Christians in the Holy Land and
their general state, and then entertain questions.
Janet will also be speaking to Dr. Spath's Adult class on Sunday
morning, October 3, at 9:30 am, specifically about the work of Sabeel.
The Sabeel Center is supported by a number of Christian churches in the
United States, including the Global Missions of the United Methodist
Church, the United Church of Christ, and the Disciples of Christ.
