To introduce myself---------
Tony Conrad
I am a colleague of Trebor; I look forward to crossing paths and sharing
interests with many of you next weekend.
I teach video at UB, while also touring occasionally with my films or music
performances.
My early music was called "minimal;" my early films were called
"structural."
Around 1990 I began to work collaboratively with other Buffalo media
makers, with the Buffalo Public Schools, and with college and K-12 students
to animate local participation in public access and education access
television.
Among other efforts, we created the weekly hour-long programs "Studio of
the Streets" (interviews with passers-by), "School News" (interactive
bulletin board), and "Homework Helpline" (call-in by and for students). In
a surprise political move later in the decade, the City of Buffalo took
over operation of public access television, effectively ending our
participation.
My work in music, while not generally collaborative, is pitted against the
authoritarianism of the western tradition in theory and composition.
In the talk show, I will be doing the Paul Shafer role, playing/DJing on a
stack of 78s spun with a power drill.
Later, I may want to videotape some of our discussions...........
