i'd be interested in seeing these "butterfly" handlebars.
personally, i use schwinn-style cruiser handlbars on my urban bike, they're great! they're off a late 90's Specialized Shark cruiser (if any of you remember them), are wide, and sit me quite upright, but if need be into winds i hold them in the middle and its just like i've got flat bars. you can also rest your elbows on the handgrips, thereby putting yourself into quite a good tuck for aerodynamics too. but for major traffic, they put you up and visible and give you good control. main reason i went to them is because mtnbike flat or riser bars had me too far forward which made worse the sore neck and shoulders i get from sitting at a computer all day (called OOS here (occupational overuse syndrome)). another benefit is your arms are reasonably wide so you breathe quite freely.
drivers are idiots even here.

For the most part... no, drivers are idiots. It should be mandatory
that all drivers ride a bike to commute at least once in
their lives to
see how easy it is to be considerate to bikes. Off topic
here, I feel
the same about all people having to be food servers at
restaurants too.
I am not timid about my riding but find myself on the sidewalk on the
daily ride quite often. There just isn't a good place to
ride in a few
sections of road. But on a positive note, I must endorse these new
fangled "butterfly" handlebars I've installed recently! These were
purchased mail-order from a nifty bike shop in New Orleans.
I'll have
to post the link another time. Having multiple hand
positions has been
such a positive!

Wow, John, congratulations! That's quite a commute, and
|
far beyond any
| | commute I've had. Mine's a measly 2.1 miles now, and has
|
never been
| | more
than 4 miles since '89 when I started commuting.
You've made quite a commitment, and I'm glad that you're
|
enjoying the

Are drivers respectful down there 'round Jupiter?
Take care,
Chaad
