Chaad,
Thanks for the reply - you are "spot on" when it comes to the
experiences I have encountered in my search.
The Burley is pretty nice ("Runabout", I believe), especially in the 27
speed configuration. If I am not mistaken, MSRP somewhere in the $1,100
range, plus or minus - "ouch" .... seems like a lot for a commuter bike
(not to mention I am pretty tight when it comes to spending that kind of
cash).
I'm going to browse a very large used bike store in Madison, WI today
(Budget Bicycles); they have a reputation for being a bit on the pricey
side, but wow, what a selection.

Mark,
Seems like steel frames outfitted for commuting/touring with 26"ers are
getting hard to find without getting into high $, semi-customs or full
customs. There are plenty of cool, steel MTB frames, but they're racing
frames without braze-ons or fender mounts. But, if you're willing to pay
and
build a frame up yourself, you could have a pretty sweet steed!
On that note, I've had problems fitting full coverage fenders to bikes
with
disc brakes, so pay attention to your brake selection (look at lower
profile
hydraulic calipers as opposed to mechanicals, which I've found protrude
and
interfere with the fender stays) or have the braze-ons moved from the
drop-out to further up the seatstays and fork so that you avoid the
congested area altogether.
One of the cooler factory commuter bikes is from Burley, it's steel with
grease ports at the BB, rigid fork, front disc brake, and plenty of
rack/fender mounts (except at the front fork, but clamps should work
there).
I forget the model name, but it was in the catalog this past winter.
Some
of them they're spec'ing with internal geared rear hubs, but you can't
shift
under power, so they are very unsporting! Low maintenance, but low
performance, too.
Anyway, good luck in your search, and let us know what you find!
Cheers,
Chaad

Howdy !
I'm new to this list ...... getting back into cycling/commuting and
looking for ideas.
Currently riding a LWB recumbent for one season (RANS Stratus) - has
been good to my sore knees. Want to get back on a diamond frame; bomb
proof commuter/short tourer, steel frame with 26" tires/wheels. I
really miss the DF bike.
