What I found interesting about this was that it appeared to me that
Jesus kept finding the will to go on when he saw his mother. Was that
just my imaignation?

No, that element is certainly there. Cf. my earlier comments about how
the Jesus of this film ironically encourages a second round of flogging
because he wants to make his mother proud, or something.
