SHAFER WORLD PREMIERE AND 40th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS
CLOSE THE CITY CHOIR OF WASHINGTON'S TRIUMPHANT SECOND SEASON
Washington, DC, March 25, 2009 - On April 19, 2009 at 5:00 p.m., The
City Choir of Washington will perform their final season subscription
concert at The National Presbyterian Church in Washington, DC. The
program will feature the world premiere of a new work by GRAMMY Award-
winner, Robert Shafer, Lux Aeterna, along with Franz Joseph Haydn's
Lord Nelson Mass and Maurice Duruflé's Requiem.
Shafer, who is celebrating his 40th anniversary as a professional
conductor, composer, educator, and church musician in the Washington
area, has dedicated his new piece to The City Choir of Washington.
The City Choir will honor Maestro Shafer for his many contributions to
the musical community with a series of events to be held in April and
May, culminating with a grand reception on Sunday evening, May 31,
2009 at La Maison Française.
"Lux Aeterna is a major work," Shafer says," and the largest piece I
have composed in more than 30 years. My goal is to translate into
sound my fascination with light itself, both the infinite variety and
beauty of natural light, and the color of light as it is transformed
by the stained glass of a great cathedral. There is also a journey
from chaotic darkness to the light of eternal peace that gives the
piece its dramatic shape."
The City Choir of Washington is comprised of 110 professional-level
volunteer singers. The concert will also feature William Neil playing
The National Presbyterian Church's extraordinary Skinner organ.
Tickets for the April 19, 2009 performance start at $20 and include
special discounts for students, groups, and seniors.
