East Timor: Chief Orders Foreign Ministry To Save Electricity or Swelter
East Timorese Foreign Minister Jose Ramos Horta ordered his
staff Tuesday to turn off computers, lights and air conditioning
before leaving work or face stiff penalties.
Violators of the austerity measures could face fines of up to
USD 100 per office - more than a month´s salary for many ministry
employees, and face one week without air conditioning in sweltering
Dili.
"This waste of power in a country with so few resources is
unacceptable", Ramos Horta said a communique distributed throughout
the ministry.
