A word from our Traffic Division:

As cold weather approaches it becomes more common to see vehicles idling without a driver behind the wheel. This often happens when you decide to warm your car up on those cold days that soon will be coming our way. But it also can happen when you decide to leave the ignition on while you run into a gas station or convenience store because “it’ll only take a minute”. You may not be aware that by leaving your vehicle unattended you are breaking the law. Leaving the vehicle unattended can often attract thieves who are watching and waiting for these opportunities.

Locking your doors is often not a deterrent for a car thief. If someone is willing to risk their freedom to steal a car, breaking a window to accomplish their goal is a small price to pay. Approximately 40% of the vehicles stolen in Davidson County are stolen with the keys left in the ignition. If your vehicle is left unattended you may be ticketed and fined. To save yourself the $50.00 fine and reduce your risk of becoming a victim of a vehicle theft, please turn your car off and lock all doors.

The Tennessee Law (TCA 55-8-162 Unattended Motor Vehicles) that addresses this issue states:

“No person driving or in charge of a motor vehicle shall permit it to stand unattended without first stopping the engine, locking the ignition, and effectively setting the brake thereon and, when standing upon any grade, turning the front wheels to the curb or side of the highway.”

Activity:

Monday 11/2/2009 - Crime Suppression Unit: (09-890694) Around Dickerson & Homestead Road, Detective Rice observed an apparent drug transaction take place between a M/B and another vehicle occupied by three M/W’s. Detectives coordinated to follow and set up surveillance on the buyers. The buyers parked behind the local McDonald’s and proceeded to indulge in their recent purchase. Detectives moved in for the takedown and caught two of the three occupants in the process of injecting Dilaudid into their arms. A happy meal of sorts. Also recovered from the vehicle were an additional 12 Dilaudid pills. Arrested were Russell A. Blackwell and Steve A. Stanley. Both were visiting from Dekalb County.

During the remainder of the shift, detectives surveyed local hotspots and searched for working girls. No working girls were spotted tonight. Detectives set up surveillance in a vacant trailer at a local trailer park that has been plagued with drug complaints. Although the trailer park was relatively quiet, surveillance produced one traffic stop and one traffic arrest.

B-Shift, Patrol: (09-890590) At 2511 Dickerson Pike, there was an armed robbery. A business owner   was standing outside of the market he owns. Suspect #1 (M/B, @18) and suspect #2 (M/B, @18) walked past the victim. They stopped, turned around, and walked back. Suspect #2 drew a small, silver handgun, pointed it at the victim’s head, and demanded his money. Suspect #1 also demanded money. Suspect #2 threatened to shoot the victim if he did not give them money. He gave the suspects his money and ran. He ran to his vehicle and then started following the suspects. He lost track of the suspects and believed they ran into Dellway Villa Apartments. K9 responded and assisted, but was unable to conduct a track due to the amount of foot traffic in the area. Aviation was not used because it was believed the suspects ducked into an apartment.

(09-890363) At 2:45 pm, police responded to a shots fired call on Iverson Street. While responding, it was discovered that a man was shot in the upper right thigh by "Tiko" (M/B, unknown age). The victim ran into the business at 3233 Gallatin Pike in order to seek refuge and aid. NFD transported him to VUMC. East precinct detectives responded to the crime scene. ID processed the crime scene.
