Thanks to all of you who took the time to read and comment on my Word
typesetting article (http://www.aaronshep.com/publishing).
I completely agree that Word should not be used for projects with
complex layouts or large graphics. I use InDesign myself for those
purposes.
One comment made, though, was that Word "doesn't recognize blank
pages, so you have to type something on a page to get it to print."
The way to get a completely blank page, without even headers or
footers, is to define a section break as starting a new page on the
next odd or even page, whatever you need. The skipped page will be
completely blank.
As to the suggestion about making Word justify like WordPerfect, this
has been mentioned to me several times, and I must advise against it.
First of all, it does not make Word expand and subtract, it only
makes Word subtract. In general, this is typographically less
preferable than adding space for creating type that appears even.
Also, if you follow all my other suggestions for settings and
adjustments, you'll find that Word's spacing between words is not at
all excessive, so there is no problem to begin with. Finally, this
setting makes a hash of the text in some versions of Word, including
Word 2001 for the Mac.
By the way, the article now includes a link to a PDF sample page from
my ebook, so you can see the results of my suggestions without having
to buy the ebook.
