In general this method subtracts space, but only up to a certain limit,
at which point adding space is deemed preferable. Logically, it has to
work that way, since Word has to know what the minimum space allowable
between words is. I don't think Word allows you to change this minimum
value (WordPerfect does; so do professional page layout programs).
As to which looks preferable, this is an aesthetic judgement (up to a
point). With Word's default settings, the WordPerfect algorithm looks
much better to me. But as you say, adjust everything else properly and
Word can give reasonable results. If your efforts to persuade people to
use Word properly prove successful, then I (and many others) would be
extremely grateful.
