We have an account with NTL, non-cable. The subscription involves an
0800 (free) telephone number for internet access and a certain number
of telephone calls. However, in the last day or so, my daughter - the
main internet user - has been getting lots of customer services
messages telling her to download up to date software. She tells me
that this happened a month ago, as well. She downloads the software,
reboots and, on going back on the internet, the whole thing starts
again.

Is the message about downloading new dialling software? If so, there was
an article about this yesterday (Oct 22nd) by Charles Arthur in The
Independent Review, Science & Technology section. (I haven't checked
whether the article is available on the website.) Apparently NTL is changing
the dial-up numbers for its "Freedom" service, but as the information about
downloading new dial-up software came by email from tech support lots of
people thought it was a spoof or a virus. Also the software isn't written by
NTL and is downloaded from a page that is not on the NTL website.
Apparently there's nothing on the NTL website to explain any of this.

Thank goodness I have cable...
