I'm definitely of two minds about Microsoft's latest security
strategy, which consists of *not* signalling critical flaws
when they are discovered but holding the information for a
monthly release. Perhaps it will educate people into doing
a monthly update but ...

Monthly Microsoft patches
October 22, 2003
Vol. 2, No. 21
Microsoft has decided to release patches, even those that are
deemed critical, only once a month starting in October. The
decision comes after system administrators complained that they
couldn't patch office systems fast enough, finishing one only to
find another patch waiting to be posted, then another. Microsoft
will now release patches only monthly, usually midmonth. And the
first batch is a doozy: five critical, one important, numbered
MS03-041 through MS03-047. Perhaps this is better. Although
I'll miss the Wednesday afternoon patch announcements from
Microsoft, often there were long stretches without them.
At least there will always be one announcement monthly,
and maybe we all can get into the habit of updating our systems
each month.
