Unemployment Numbers and Military Re-enlistment  Yvonne Viva LaRose
 Apr 05, 2009 18:25 PDT

Some time ago, I wrote a forecast that discussed one of the traditional,
though unofficial, ways to cure unemployment -- war. The enlistment of
military personnel takes pressure off of the current employment
opportunities that are scarce and puts those available personnel into
readily available work, with training. There (in the military and war
zone), the personnel are essentially out of the country and job pools
for at least 12 to 18 months.

We now have several active war zones and people here on these shores who
are advocating to bring home those who are serving in those places.

I've recently started meeting some of those who have been discharged
after serving one and even two tours of duty in either of Iraq or Iran.
They were glad to be home. However as time passed, they began to talk
about re-enlisting and looking forward to serving again. One young man
said he saw it as an opportunity to do so. I was disappointed because
the danger in which he will live is obvious. Making my acquaintance and
his future even more poignant is the fact that of the ones who work at
the place where he is employed, he demonstrates some of the best work
skills and practices.

Alas, his wages are low and he is working two jobs in order to care for
his family.

Given these situations of re-enlistment and taking pressure off of the
unemployment rolls, do you feel our current job scarcity and level of
unemployment is real or inflated urgency?

Going beyond the unemployment and enlistment issues, eventually these
men and women will again be discharged back into the main population and
will begin a new job search. I recall reading history and the accounts
of veterans who faced major hardships in getting hired. Is it possible
these military re-enlisters face similar hardships?
