Ahlan Norai and EMC:
I enjoy to read your notes, Norai, for you succinct, articulate, and percep=
tive, of course, above all, logical. Today, however, I will choose to focus=
on the third paragraph of your note below that says the following:
"...Even as we speak, many young Eritreans are crossing borders to live as =
refugees in neighboring countries.=C2=A0 They are as good and as active as =
those who preceded them.=C2=A0 They never go to dormancy.=C2=A0 They are do=
ing their best to acquire better lives for themselves and their families.=
=C2=A0 Those who are disappearing in the deserts and dying in the open seas=
are not doing it for fun.=C2=A0 It is all part of Eritreans=E2=80=99 non-d=
ormant nature, always seeking for the better..."
Literally, I have just gotten off the phone from speaking with a family fri=
end who happened to have made the journey from Sudan to Toronto, Canada. Am=
ong many things, the theme of our conversation hovered over the fact that t=
his couple want to continue their education and I knew next to nothing abou=
t Canada's school system, thus, I couldn't be of help to him other than to =
mention EMC and many members in it being in Canada.=20
Therefore, I promised this family friend that I will try to find him people=
he can contact to get the information he needs. Those of you that can assi=
st with disseminating the information that this couple may need you can do =
so by contatcting him at the following e-mail. rezka-@yahoo.com. On a s=
econd thought, I will just cc Rezkay this e-mail so he is in the loop immed=
iately. Berhan Beyan you are one of the Eritrean Canadians that came to min=
d...Please share with this anxcious couple that's trying to make up for the=
time lost in Sudan.
Brotherly,
Beyan

Mehaba Beyan:=20
You made me go back and read sister Leila=E2=80=99s
writing twice.=C2=A0 I did not
understand her take to mean that the cause of QUIETUDE at
EMC was caused by the =E2=80=9Cblow of the e-mail system=E2=80=9D, as
you did.=C2=A0 Rather, Leila is saying
the quietude started from the time EMC experienced
difficulty with the mailing system.=C2=A0
Let me explain.=C2=A0 Instead
of saying, for example, =E2=80=9Csince 20 December 2008=E2=80=9D she is
saying since the =E2=80=9Cblow to EMC mailing system=E2=80=9D.=C2=A0 The =
|
message being that of timing and
| | not cause.=C2=A0 Leila thinks the
cause is that we are overwhelmed with
=C2=A0 issues to talk about/tackle considering the economic
situation and how it may be hitting home.=C2=A0 And she graciously provid=
|
ed helpful
| | advice.=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=20
Based on a wrong premise, you attributed to
us a culture of dormancy when handling ourselves in real
world.=C2=A0 That is the last thing I
would say about Eritreans.=C2=A0 In
the last three decades we went through a lot. We lived as
refugees but astonished our hosts by our lust for work and
self reliance.=C2=A0 Seldom did we beg
or engage in any criminal act to survive.=C2=A0 We had been very hard wor=
|
king and
| | honest.=C2=A0 We had also been blessed
with family values that enshrined in us helping each other
for the good.=C2=A0 I believe this is
all too familiar to us and there is
=C2=A0 no need for giving examples.=20
Even as we speak, many young Eritreans are
crossing borders to live as refugees in neighboring
countries.=C2=A0 They are as good and
as active as those who preceded them.=C2=A0
They never go to dormancy.=C2=A0
They are doing their best to acquire better lives for
themselves and their families.=C2=A0
Those who are disappearing in the deserts and dying
in the open seas are not doing it for fun.=C2=A0 It is all part of Eritre=
|
ans=E2=80=99
| | non-dormant nature, always seeking for the better.=C2=A0=C2=A0=20
You mentioned Eritreans become friends when
living close to each other.=C2=A0 The
friendship diminishes as soon as one moves to wherever
destiny takes him/her.=C2=A0
Naturally, the frequent physical interaction has to
abruptly come to an end; you cannot be together when you are
not together.=C2=A0 But the friendship
will always be there.=C2=A0 Recently,
I met a dear friend after a very long time, more than twenty
years.=C2=A0 Our friendship was
intact.=C2=A0 And we had wonderful
time.=C2=A0 Many people tell
me=C2=A0similar
=C2=A0 stories.=20
You said =E2=80=9C=E2=80=A6=E2=80=A6. that we
Muslim Eritrean would rather talk of Muslims in Bosnia or in the far out
lands rather than be worked up with the national issues that
should be dear to our hearts.=E2=80=9D=C2=A0
National issues are as dear to us, Muslim Eritreans
(ME), as are to non-Muslim Eritreans.=C2=A0
MEs have always been deeply engaged in national
issues.=C2=A0 We have a plethora of
Eritrean organizations.=C2=A0 Dig
there and you will find what I am talking about.=C2=A0 =C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=
|
=C2=A0=20
| | You also stated =E2=80=9CSo, while
we've been doing our version of Rip Van
Winkle that slept for 20 years and found the
world changed for ever=E2=80=9D.=C2=A0
That is not terrible at least we are better than
=E2=80=9CAhl Elkahaf=E2=80=9D who did it
for centuries!!! - lighter side.=20

Ahlan Leila & the Rest:
=20
If "the blow of the e-mail system" is all it took
to put us to a
virtual sleep, then, all I can say is it is a reflection of
the actual way in
which we handle ourselves in the real world. It's been
my experience in the
United States, whenever an Eritrean moves to a neighborhood
and finds Eritreans
nearby, they become friendly until one or the other moves
on to where ever life
destines the family to move to, at which time the
friendship seems to subside
and the relationship kind of ends, if not abruptly,
certainly, slowly.=20
=20
This may be a manifestation also of the lack of cohesivley
working together in
the larger contexts as communities as countrymen and
countrywomen that Saleh
Gadi recently addressed, which I paraphrase here: that we
Muslim Eritrean would
rather talk of Muslims in Bosnia or in the far out lands
rather than be worked
up with the national issues that should be dear to our
hearts.
=20
So, while we've been doing our version of Rip Van
Winkle that slept for 20
years and found the world changed for ever, I am making a
new home at the newly
reinvigorated Asmarino.com and I will try to break the
Eritrean mentality that I
explained above, which is to say, I will keep abreast of
what goes in EMC as
well. After all, who said one can't walk and chew a gum
at the same time.

Beyan
