Yes, indeed, I salute those youngsters with my eyes and thoughts and with
the question: what are you, what wonderful mystery is there deep inside you?
I salute you with my determination: how can I help you? I salute them in the
same way as an astronomer salutes a star that always has been, is and will
be. That salutation should hold a place somewhere in between the scientist's
ecstasy and a humble prayer.

Several people replied that they don't allow groupwork. However, if you
only allow the students to work individually or in pairs, how long does it
take you to finish the oral presentations? I spent 9 lessons on project
work. I have students who, at the end of 9 lessons, still have no material
(that I've seen). On the other hand, I have a group that is completely
finished, apart from typing up their work. Anyway, assuming that you can do
no more than 4 oral presentations in a lesson, it would take me 10 lessons
to finish the oral presentations if all of my students did their work
individually (there are 37 in the class). That's two full weeks. Add that
to the two weeks of project work and we're talking about at least a month of
only projects. This seems like a bit much to me. And how on earth do you
keep an entire class interested in oral presentations for two whole weeks??
Also, how long does it take you to assess almost 40 projects? Certainly, it
would take me a lot longer to assess 40 projects than it does to grade 40
exams, yet I was under the impression that project work wasn't supposed to
be more work for the teacher...
I'm frustrated and glad that I have next week off.

Hi Bari,
Many of the problems that you are facing are ones which I've
anticipated as happening to any teacher, and the solutions I came
up with may not help you at this point, and may not leave
everyone feeling thrilled, but I'll mention them anyway.
1. Don't allow groupwork - only individuals or pairs.

I think (only my opinion) your kids are doing the project too fast. We are
planning 1.5-2 months of work - they only work in class. Did the groups that
are finished spend a lot of time at home working (summarizing, writing and
so on...?)
I remember now that your project has a lot of viewing vidios - could you
somehow get that done in school ?(work in a class with a tv? Have them take
turns seeing their films?)
Also - how long a e the presentations? Last year I did 10 presentations in 2
lessons - each one was about 5 min.
In any case - I think we are all learning from these projects and every year

Livnat set to unveil revolutionary education policy
Haaretz - December 18, 2003
While Israel's political arena braces for Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's
political address Thursday at the Herzliya Conference, officials in the
Education, Culture and Sport Ministry are anticipating what they describe as
a "drama" of their own: a speech to be given at the conference by Education
Minister Limor Livnat that is expected to relate to a revolutionary
education policy.
The education minister will deliver her address while serving as chair at a
forum entitled "Changes in the education system."
As part of the reforms, Livnat plans to institute a five-day school week,
oversee the layoff of thousands of teachers and expand the jobs of teachers
who remain within the system.
Livnat and her aides are aware that these changes are liable to spark bitter
confrontations with the nation's two teacher associations, and could include
prolonged school strikes. As a result, the timing of the plan's unveiling -
in the middle of the school year - could be less than ideal. Nonetheless,
Livnat is resolved to go full steam ahead with her education reform program;
in doing so, she could implement the most comprehensive reforms ever
instituted in the school system.

I never realized that school was a six-day affair in Israel.
So, maybe this e-list should invite comments on what teachers in Israel
would like to hear in her speech. What reforms would you all like to see?

Subject: [etni] Re: Project Problems

1.5 to 2 months of working every day or only once a week? My kids did
project work every day for two weeks, which is what is suggested both in the
project guidelines and in the NBA handbook (8 lessons, actually -- mine did
9). They couldn't do any of the videotaping or even working with the
videotapes in school -- they did that part at home. They also did the
interviews at home (though they wrote the questions in class). The
summarizing was done in class (apart from the groups who didn't bring
material to class and now have to do ALL of the work at home). I don't know
how long the oral presentations will be yet, but I'm assuming they'll be
between 5 and 10 minutes each. There will be 9 all together (there ended up
being 9 groups of 4 and 1 student who didn't do a project because she didn't
bother telling me that she'd be abroad for the entire 2 weeks).
I have to say that working in groups helped them tremendously (apart from
the problems that I mentioned in my previous emails, of course). There was
a lot of interaction and they spent a lot of time explaining things to each
other (meaning that there was a lot less for me to explain). At least a
couple of the groups were obviously having a very good time throughout the
entire project (the same two groups that started working right at the
beginning and were always busy). They called me over repeatedly, not to ask
questions, but rather to share some of what they had learned with me. There
WERE a few high points to this experience, but I still need to think about
ways to work out the difficulties of absent students and lazy students.
Oh, and most important of all, I now know that you do not need to speak
Hebrew (or any other language) to talk to people in Israel. Among other
things, I now know how to say "I'll call you later" without saying a word.
I actually asked a bunch of students in different classes what I was
"saying" and every single one understood immediately. It goes like this:
roll your hands around each other, point to yourself, hold your hand up next
to your face with your pinky pointing at your mouth and your thumb pointing
at your ear and then point to the person you're "talking" to. And if you're
ever in China, don't say "come here" by holding out your index finger and
moving it back and forth. The Chinese only call animals that way.

the fact that I think that if I get one more class I'll go nuts is my

I really got a kick from that article on the etni site about school for 4
year olds. Certainly doesn't fit Israel's culture and pre-school
methods. Sounds like the NBA--pedagogic theory, far removed from
reality. When the time spent in "rikuz" has been shrinking to nothing,
kids are not being taught how to listen and concentrate. Teachers on all
levels suffer from this "cultural disability." (my term) You need many
more teachers, not fewer to teach these kids properly. Most learn nothing
playing in their "pinot."

If classes are too large to teach effectively now, (and studies have proved
that learning improved when class sizes go down) I would love to understand
how our beloved and learned minister of education thinks that firing
thousands more teachers is going to solve the problem.
