Deborah asked:

I thought I had understood the NBA completely, but now I am left with
a question or two:

How many times can a student take a module while he is studying in
school?

One of my colleagues told me that a student can't be tested on the
same module twice in the same year. In other words if said student takes A
and B in winter and then wants to improve on B and take C in the summer of
the same year, he can't be retested on B in that year. Is this so, if so
where is it written in the NBA Handbook?
Can a student however be retested in the following year?

And a derivative of this question: Which grade counts the higher one or
the last one?

Judy's answer:

A pupil can be retested on the same module during the same school year or
the year after. As of now, there is no limititation as to how many times a
pupil can take an exam again in order to improve his grade.

Also for this year, (this is a decision of the Director-General), it is the
highest grade the pupil got on the module that counts.

Hi all--                         Monday a.m. January 26, 2004

I am just recovering from having lost ALL my files that I had kept in

Eudora for years about English teaching and other subjects (they're
burned
up inside my former hard disk), SO...I know the following question has
been
asked and answered, but I don't have access to the info (which I
saved!):

Our English department has some money for software and we need
recommendations. The school is a junior high/high school with both
'regular' students (if there is such a category.....) and students with

learning disabilities of the range often discussed on the ETNI list.
English classes are being encouraged to use the computer rooms, of
which
most are connected to Internet.

Thanks in advance for any and all advice. (By the way, the ETNI list
the
envy of many other teachers of other subjects who would LOVE to be able
to
'network' the way we do, about teaching sorts of questions as well as
discussions we have had from time to time-- threads.')

Have a good one--

Margier

Any suggestions?

Some time ago, Ella told me of a Russian Hebrew dictionary, where the
Hebrew is transliterated into Russian letters.
Unfortunately, this dictionary isnow out of print. Does anyone on the

might exist?
Many thanks for your help.

Rana asked:

In an english staff meeting that we held in our school two days ago, the
English co-ordinator told us that, according to the newest corection on NBA,
students in 11th grade at all levels, who will take their bagrut next year
in 2005, are not supposed to do projects and will not be tested at any time
on projects neither for their school grade nor for the bagrut grade. Is that
true?!

Judy's answer:

No, it is not true.

Rana asked:

From what I understood, when I read the material on the NBA corrections, the
students are supposed to do a project, yet they will be tested on them only
in the external oral bagrut and not for the "Tziyoun Magein" (i.e. the
schoolgrade?)

Judy's answer:

You are absolutely correct!

Shalom everyone
I am a new immigrant teacher from the US (California).
I just finished ulpan aleph and am starting to go
through the process of converting my teaching

new to Israel, but new to teaching as well. I have
been trying to track down the woman at Misrad

hopefully once I do I'll have a better idea of what to
expect. But in the meantime if there is anyone out

Thank you

I have a question about the NBA. If a pupil fails one of the modules,
does
he/she have to retake in order to pass the final amount of units, or
is
his/her grade calculated as it is. For example, for 4 pts, if he/she
fails
E, but passed C & D, can he/she pass the 4pts from the average of the
three
modules??
I'd appreciate any "qualified"answers.
Thanks,
Elaine

Does that hold true for kids who took the old format (this year's

retake
it
in the summer, will the highest grade count?

Judy's answer:

And my "translated" version...

The criteria for electronic dictionaries are identical to those for regular
dictionaries and depend upon the level of the exam that the student is
taking.

For module A:

* Translation from English to Hebrew, Arabic or another language
* At least 10,000 entries
* Sensitivity to religious and social issues (I have no idea what that means
or if I translated it correctly)
* In addition to definitions, includes information about part of speech
(verb forms, irregular plural forms, comparative and superlatives) and also
phrasal verbs

For modules B through F (and I assume now G):

* Translation from English to Hebrew, Arabic or another language plus
definitions in simple English
* At least 40,000 entries
* Sensitivity to religious and social issues (again, I have no idea what
that means or if I translated it correctly)
* In addition to definitions, includes information about part of speech
(verb forms, irregular plural forms, comparative and superlatives) and also
phrasal verbs and expressions

I translated the above information directly from the "hozer mankal".

I'm not sure I've ever seen an electronic dictionary that meets all of the
above criteria (for either category).

Tricky 'MyDoom' e-mail worm spreading quickly
CNN - January 26,

(CNN) -- Hackers unleashed an agile worm Monday -- using a sneaky, fairly
new tactic to get unsuspecting computer users to diffuse their malicious
code.

Dubbed "W32/MyDoom" or "Novarg," the worm circulated so fast anti-virus
firms quickly raised threat warnings to "high" saying the bug was one of the
worst in recent months.

The worm is contained in e-mails with random senders' addresses and subject
lines. While the body of the e-mail varies, it usually includes what appears
to be an error message, such as: "The message cannot be represented in 7-bit
ASCII encoding and has been sent as a binary attachment."

While many computer users are savvy about not opening executable files or
other attachments that may contain viruses, the latest worm masks itself as
an innocuous text document or a file that your computer appears unable to
read.

"This one is almost begging you to click on the attachment," said Sharon
Ruckman, the head of anti-virus firm Symantec's security response team.

It seems too difficult - but I discovered today that its not.

The man he killed

"Had he and I but met
By some old ancient inn,
We should have sat us down to wet
Right many a nipperkin

"But ranged as infantry,
And staring face to face,
I shot at him as he at me,
And killed him in his place.

"I shot him dead because--
Because he was my foe,
Just so: my foe of course he was;
