Dear Colleagues,

I'm in the process of gathering useful media for a multicultural project
for grades eight and nine all levels in English.

I am searching for readable material for performance-based tasks related to
the following Jewish communities from the diaspora:

Ehtiopia, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Yemen, Morocco, Russia, Central Europe,
Syria, Iran etc.

Information can include: traditions, symbols, crafts, music, dwellings,
folktales, poetry, history, maps in English, tourist sites, schooling, life
in the past, games, holidays, foods, religions, currency, pictures, immigrant
stories etc.

I'll be glad to share with others information that I have found.

Thanks for your help,

Shoshana Plavin

I've just read the oral bagrut guidelines for the modular bagrut this
summer and noticed that my pupils have to give a 3 minute monologue about
their project. I'm sure they will do well, but was this just decided? I
heard they would be asked questions about their project, not be asked to
give a monologue.

I am still looking for penpals for 4th grade pupils (native English
speakers) from a religious school in Beit Shemesh. One girl is particularly
interested in corresponding with a girl from an English speaking country.

Any takers?

Alissa

Of the accomodations available to students with LD, recording unseens on
audio cassettes is widespread. However, another alternative is available -
installing a text reader on a computer which would then read the text to the
student.
Has anyone had experience with any of these programs? If so, I would
appreciate any information or recommendations you might have with programs
that read English.

Yours,
Ruth Ophir

Hello Everybody!

Last year I sent a message in this list in order to invite teachers to share
a project online. Even though we were in October and our classes in Brazil
finish in November, we had some students who were very motivated. Four other
countries were involved in the beginning but only a teacher from Israel and
another from the US could take their students. Because our school year in
Brazil has just started I am here again to invite other teachers!

I am part of a group of ESL teachers (Middle and High School) in Brazil.
I've been 'reading' this list for more than one year and I know how
interested and motivated teachers are.

A short time ago, I read the postcard exchange project and the replies to
it. As my coordinator asked me about the possibility of using a chat with
our students, that project came to my mind. What if we put our students in
contact in order to have them using what they've been learning in our
classes?!?!? They could 'chat' about themselves, world issues or whatever.
They would be using English in a real context and for a real purpose. We can
set a time to chat and/or let them free to chat whenever they wish. Teachers
can be there just as visitors, if they want to, watching/helping them if
necessary.

Our students are from 11 to 18. Therefore, it would be nice if we had only
teens taking part of it.

I think this would be a motivating activity for them. They could find out,
for example that in China they enjoy the same songs they do here in Brazil,
among a thousand things. :-)

In addition, this chat/forum could be used as a research or exercise tool to
your classes. Teachers might assign some exercises on topics connected or
not with the structure or function students are learning. Students would
discover the information in the chat/forum and bring it to classroom.
Because we are going to have a chat and a forum, if any student tries to use
the chat and there is nobody there to 'share', this student could leave a
message in the forum.

If you are interested in bringing your students, let me know and I'll send
you the link. We are calling the group YICOM - Youngsters International
Community, the chat YIChat and the forum YIForum.

It'll be a pleasure to have our students sharing information, won't it?

Thank you

Does anybody have any good web sites for online study guides for the
following novels:
Tale of Two Cities
Hucklberry Finn and Tom Sawyer
To Kill a Mockingbird
Jacob Two - Two and the Hooded Fang
Oliver Twist
Dune
I am specifically looking for sites which I can download or students can
access. I assign books for students to read and they must complete a
project on the novel based on themes, historical contexts, relevance to
modern life, or literary analysis. I am preparing a list of novels suitable
for grades 9 - 11 English speakers and would welcome ideas.
