From: "natan nagel" <nag-@netvision.net.il>
Dear ETNI people,
I was hoping to find a forum to write to and express my great, my enormous
concern, about the imminent new bagrut. I have a class of eleventh-grade
English speakers, who are supposed to be sitting modules E, F and G in May.
As you know, the practice books for modules F and G have not yet seen light.
I have just spoken to ECB and they say that the books should be coming out
towards the end of next week.
My class, together with all the others in the same position, have so far
done only one exam on the levels of F and G - the ones that were published
in the original NBA handbook. (These tests had various problematic aspects;
the texts were ambiguous in some parts and the questions were quite
unclear.) The new modules demand a different way of looking at texts which
is almost impossible to teach without appropriate materials. How are we
expected to prepare the pupils adequately in approximately two months (with
Pesach in the middle?!)
And what about matconet grades? I am furious about this. I would like to
request that other teachers who feel similarly help to bring pressure on the
Ministry to ask them to reconsider and start the new modules (or at least F
and G) only from next winter. Please respond!
Desperately yours,
Miriam Nagel

We have not and I was wondering if it has arrived in other places.

Subject: [etni] the quicktionary
Date: Wed, 3 Mar 2004 12:12:16 +0200
Two reasons why not to allow the use of the quicktionary:
1) It will put users of ordinary dictionaries at a tremendous disadvantage,
which is clearly unfair. The existing accomodations have more than "levelled
out the pitch" for LD students.. The quicktionary will tilt it very heavily
in their favour, even more so in view of the fact that so many are not
genuinely disadvantaged but have parents who have the know-how and the means
to manipulate the system.
2) If we allow all students to use it, as Hanan seems to be suggesting,
there will be no element of reading comprehension in the exam. In fact,
there's an idea for a major saving in the ministry's budget - distribute
quicktionaries free to all students and drop English from the school
curriculum! You heard it first on Etni and from me - I want the credit!
But seriously,I refuse to believe that anyone is even toying with the idea
of allowing the use of quicktionaries in the exam.
Could we please have an authoritative answer on this one from the Chief
Inspector.
As for Rachel's question, the Chief Inspector is on record as having said
that old format bagrut grades CANNOT be combined with new format modules.

This question arises. Are we preparing students of English to pass exams
are we preparing them to use this international language for communication?
We use pencils and pens for writing, radios for broadcasting the L.C. exam.
Paper to write on, and so on.
As I wrote, any dictionary is a tool to be used. Is it possible that there
are teachers out there who may believe that by making something, like an
exam, more difficult is thus better?
I still remember the same arguments used by vocational teachers in regards
to the use of calculators. Who won out? Does anyone hear that their use is a
failure? Is it possible that teachers of English in Israel are so
conservative that any change unfamiliar to them is wrong?
Thank G-d that Zahal doesn't have that attitude. If it did, we would not be
discussing this point right now.

Hi everyone, here are two plays coming up, in English. The first is a
comedy, lots of fun and worth seeing, the second is classic Shakespeare and
also worth seeing, perhaps even a good opportunity for bringing groups of
students.
GOODNIGHT DESDEMONA, GOODMORNING JULIET by Anne-Marie MacDondald is a
riotous retelling of "Othello" and "Romeo and Juliet." Constance, an
assistant professor at Queens University, finds herself in the middle of the
plots of these two plays, turning tragedy into comedy as she tries to save
the tragic heroines from themselves.
Tickets only 50nis, discounts available for groups.
Playing March 3, 4, 6, 10, 11, 13 at 8:30pm at Center Stage Theatre. Call
02-561-9251 or email thea-@themerkaz.org for details.
"My bounty is as boundless as the sea, my love as deep' the more I give to
thee, the more I have, for both are infinite."
ROMEO AND JULIET by William Shakespeare, a tale of star-crossed lovers
presented in classic Shakespearean style.
Performances are May 11, 12, 13, 16, 17, and 20 at 8:00pm, May 14th at
1:00pm and May 22nd at 9:30pm.

Date: Wed, 3 Mar 2004 15:54:54 +0200
etnians!
I feel that the thread begun by mentioning the quicktionary has
developed into something confusing 3 separate issues:
1) Advantages and disadvantages of the quicktionary as a tool
2)Use of electronic dictionaries in general ( are we "giving away" the
answers )
3) role of dictionaries for learners.
In my lectures ( I was in tiberias this week) I give the teachers a
simulation of a text which was translated by someone who was handed a
dictionary and took thefirst meaning of every word. I can't include it here
because of all the Hebrew. I'm sure you can all imagine it - if you don't
know to change the word order from hebrew to english, basic syntax, how to
take off the "ed" and the "est", how to look up phrasal verbs, the resulting
translation is pretty meaningless. You need knowledge and effort to utilize
any dictionary correctly. The electronic dictionary just saves time for
those who must look up a large amount of words.
The quicktionary is a complex thing. It solves the problem of hitting
the wrong keys when typing in the words, but it can only read clearly
printed text. if students write above the words (as most do) it may be
unable to identify the word because of the extra markings. it cannot read
handwriting. It is very expensive. I can't say I know it well as it has not
been allowed for use in the past.
As the the role of dictionaries in general - well ,that's too much for
now.
Take care all!

Subject: [etni] New Bagrut Confusion
I totally support the letter written by Miriam Nagel. A lot of confusion
still reigns in the field. We haven't been given adequate sample exams and
are also extremely confused about the magens required, as well as many other
issues.
Our questions have not been adequately answered and very many teachers are
still in the dark. However, this is all in line with what I've been saying
all the time - the NBA was thrust upon us (perhaps to show how progressive
the inspectorate is) without sufficient forethought and planning.
The correct thing to do, in the light of the present situation, would be to
delay the new exam. However, I fear that this will not be the case.

I am a teacher trainer and work specifically in the elementary school
system.
However, it is important for me to know what is happening at the junior
high level and high school level. From reading the mail to this forum there
seems to be nothing but confusion about the new bagrut.
Could somebody, preferably Judy, reply to the list with a clear explanation
of what is happening.
In the summer (May 2004) students will be sitting their bagrut. What format
will this years 12th graders be taking this May? Who is sitting the module
system? Will 10th and 11th grade students be taking the modules in the
framework of the bagrut exam in May, 2004?
Hopefully answers to these questions may clarify things for quite a few
frustrated teachers.
In the meanwhile,

Subject: [etni] A PowerPoint exchange center for English teachers
Fellow Etniers,
In my presentation about the use of the barco in EFL teaching, available at
http://www.wordkitchen.com/Barco.htm, I offered to share my PowerPoint
shows with other teachers around the country. In response I received
several communications from colleagues who were also willing to share. OK,
it seems that it's time for a national EFL PP exchange center located in
cyberspace. For the time being, I would like to donate some space on my
web-site. To start, I am posting a compressed exe file consisting of 9 of
my own PP presentations -- dealing with vocabulary building, markers of
cause and contrast and the technique of doing unseens . These are intended
for college students, but they could also be used for high schoolers. The
address is http://www.wordkitchen.com/barco/Presentations.exe. Whoever else
would like to share, please send me the material as a compressed file, and
I'll put it on the net, and then I'll post an announcement on our ETNI
forum giving the address and a brief description of the contents. I see
this as a temporary solution. Later on, we'll have a sophisticated indexing
device which allows a teacher to log-on and see a list of all the
presentations on the site, and download the ones that he/she wants. This
will cost something, but maybe we'll find a rich sponsor. So good barco-ing
to all of you out there.

Subject: [etni] invitation to another play in Beer Sheva
Hi All,
This time it's the girls at Ulpanat Amit who are performing a play
loosely based on "The King and I'. We've been working on it since October
and I think it will be a very entertaining evening as well as another
example of how to put on an English play with your students. Everyone is
invited. There is a 20 NIS entrance fee ( 5 NIS of which will be donated to
the local "provide a sandwich" fund). You can purchase tickets at the door
or in advance from Ulpanat Amit.
The show is about an hour long. Since this is the 15th annual English
musical at the school, there will be some extra hoopla at the final
performance which will extend the length of the show for 20 - 30 minutes.
Performances: Wednesday,March 17th , 2004 (24 Adar Aleph, 5764)
at 18:30 and at 20:30
Thursday, March 18th , 2004 ( 25 Adar
Aleph, 5764)
at 19:30
All performances will take place in the Beer Sheva Municipal Theater
Hope to see you in the audience.
Best wishes for a happy and safe Purim,
Mitzi
