Hey everyone,
Summer brings with it an impression of way too many interesting music
shows flying at your head at the same time (as visualized in the current
exhibit at the Luggage Store Gallery). I'm starting to notice a pattern
here – January, February and March musicians are still recovering from
trying to do too many shows between the holidays. In spring they start
to feel like performing again and my the time May hits, everyone's
touring again, and from June to August every other weekend is a
festival. Well, please put off your show burnout for a few more months.
Over the next 3 weeks we have the Edgetone Records New Music Summit, the
final show of this year's Project Soundwave, and a rare opportunity to
see me playing bass guitar (!) in a hip hop show (!!).
Then... next month there will be a new drum machine cd (“SoftWetFish”)
and I'll be opening for Alog (yes, the Norwegian duo Alog) at the San
Francisco Electronic Music Festival!
But first things first
1)Wed, 7/12: Matt featured on KQED's “Spark”
2)Thu, 7/20: Project Soundwave presents “I am Sound”
3)Fri, 7/21: Experimental rapper Bizzart rolls through town
4)7/27 thru 7/30: Edgetone New Music Summit
5)apologies for website
(I'll keep these as brief as possible with relevant links)
1)Wed, 7/12: Matt featured on KQED's “Spark”
Last month, I curated the audiovisual show Live>Play for Alan So's
“Project Soundwave” series, and a video crew from Spark was there to
film the show coming together. (Spark is a weekly TV show on KQED
channel 9, featuring bay area artists.) The segment will be on this week
– Wednesday at 7:30 pm, and Friday at 11:00 pm.
Here's the link to the TV show: http://www.kqed.org/arts/spark/
2)Thu, 7/20: Project Soundwave presents “I am Sound”
...and that provides a nice lead in to this next show. Live>Play was the
first of Alan So's Project Soundwave series for 2006, and this next show
is the final installment.

**Please bring love letters and texts to the show**
I AM SOUND explores the aural experiences where the audience becomes an
integral part of sound production. Curated by Alan So
With Performances by:
-- Albert Ortega (Los Angeles, CA)
-- Stefan Smuvolitz & Viviane Houle (Vancouver, Canada)
-- Alon Nechustan featuring Damon Smith (New York, NY & Oakland, CA)
LA Artist Albert Ortega's Village Array creates a sound installation
allowing participants to fully immerse themselves into sound-emitting
enclosures, for the head, hands, and ears. Canadian electronic and vocal
duo of Stefan Smuvolitz and Viviane Houle transforms words into
improvised music using audience love letters and texts with Kenaxis,
Stefan's proprietary software that manipulate sounds and music in real
time. Special guest Damon Smith performs New York composer Alon
Nechustan's Dark Forces 3, an improvisation between electronics and live
double-bass while the audience manipulates sound traveling around
the gallery.

8:30pm: 8-bit electronic punk with ON AND OFF SUPERFAST
Bizzart
Bizzart's an experimental rapper out of Los Angeles. Between 2003's Ear
Drung and 2006's Bloodshot Mama, Bizzart became something altogether
new. Once a spoken word artist turned M.C. turned abscratch
expressionist Bizzart now occupies a circuit-bent performance art
hip-hop space that none before him have occupied. A reformed poet who
has lost faith in words alone, Bizzart has tucked Alkalyne's boom bap
into bed with Accident's live noise comprovisations and together they
dream of childhood and pray to a sometimes distant God.

On and Off Superfast are here to unlearn you the teachings of the
church, state, and our educational system. we are here to drink beer. we
are here to kill war. we are here to laugh at the odds and live our
lives so well that Death will tremble to take us. and when planet Earth
is finally and completely reduced to a cosmic Mary Celeste; to Arthur C.
Clarke's proverbial carpet of "carbon ash on a radioactive wind, " there
will be neither the time nor the place to tell you 'we told you so'. so
i just thought that i should tell you now: we told you so.

4) 7/27 thru 7/30: Edgetone New Music Summit
The Edgetone New Music Summit started as a showcase of artists involved
with Edgetone Records, but over the years it has expanded to become a
snapshot of the many different forms of experimental music and sound art
in the Bay Area, as well as the entire West Coast.
This year may be the best yet, with themed evenings focused on
intermedia performance, invented instruments, the many current uses of
field recordings, and finally culminating on Sunday evening with an
ever-expanding ensemble of West Coast multi-instrumentalists (who all
share sax as a common bond).
Seriously – take a look at the schedule:

5)Apologies about website non-updates (at ribosomemusic.com)
So, last month my computer crashed, and I had to reinstall everything.
Still waiting to be tagged back in (in fact, sitting next to me this
very moment) is my website editing software. I promise to not become one
of those people who lets his website get several years out of date.
(This is of course, making the grandiose assumption that people other
than me look at it.)
I was going to do it tonight, but I wound up writing this mailing list
instead. Once the webiste's back, I'm planning on expanding the
resources for musicians and odd music fans. And I'll put up some info on
how the new drum machine cd “SoftWetFish” will be released on Tuesday,
August 8th.
