Researchers find nerve repair link
NEW YORK (UPI) -- Researchers in New York said they discovered the
molecular link to stimulate nerve regrowth.

Identifying the link -- an enzyme called soluble adenylyl cyclase --
as a key player in nerve cell growth in an embryo may someday be used
to stimulate similar growth in adults with spinal cord injuries,
Cornell University said in a news release.

Senior author Samie Jaffrey, associate pharmacology professor at
Weill Cornell Medical College, said the finding was similar to
"finding a crucial 'missing link' in the biochemical chain."

He said the discovery in their research on rats meant doctors could
begin work on introducing the enzyme directly into a damaged spinal
cord, where they said they hope it would stimulate regeneration of
axons, the transmission lines of the nervous system.

"The ultimate goal is a treatment that can prevent paralysis or
restore movement to paralyzed individuals," Jaffrey said.

Jaffrey said the team's next step would be introducing sAC to adult
axons through a harmless medium genetically designed to pinpoint on
nerve growth cones. The virus then could distribute sAC at the site.
