Angel Animals Story of the Week
August 27, 2006
Visit us at www.angelanimals.net
Dear Friends of Angel Animals,
Welcome to the Angel Animals Story of the Week.
This is an exciting week for us. We have an opportunity to bring the
messages of the new animal rescue book to a national audience. An
interview is scheduled for Tuesday, August 29 with the Washington Post
Radio program, "Hillary and Friends."
All we know now is that Linda will be on during the 11:00 EST hour. At
the time of the show, go to www.washingtonpostradio.com and click on to
the section at the top of the page that says, "Listen Live." It's our
understanding that the entire hour will be devoted to discussing animal
rescue.
To check out more of the interview schedule during this week of the
anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, look at "This Week's Interviews" at
the end of this newsletter.
Right now, most hosts are asking for practical suggestions we learned
from interviewing survivors and animal rescuers. We sound a bit like
"the sky is falling; the sky is falling" but we do feel a sense of
urgency. An article in TIME magazine (Aug. 28, 2006) issue said that
91 percent of Americans live in a moderate to high-risk area for natural
disasters or terrorism. It went on to say that most people are
tremendously unprepared and in denial that a catastrophe could happen to
them.
At the very minimum
***Make sure each of your pets has a carrier or crate with
identification on it -- your name, address, two phone numbers (one not
your home), the pet's name, sex, medical conditions, veterinarian
contact, and microchip and city registration numbers. Write this
information in indelible ink on the carrier or affix it securely in a
waterproof container.
***Have a collar and tag with emergency information on them and a leash
or harness and muzzle for dogs.
***In a separate location, keep a photo of you and your pet with the
animal's identifying characteristics. If you have to hand off your pet
to an emergency animal rescuer, you get separated, or you need entry
into an emergency vehicle or shelter, you will have what you need to
keep your pets safe and be reunited.
If you do at least this much, you will be more prepared than most people
in an entire nation where two out of three homes have family pets.
There are other important things to do. They are on our website
(www.rescuedsavinganimals.net), in our book, and on websites at the
major animal organizations.
Please -- do at least one item on the list above -- this week!
The featured story is from long-time Angel Animals reader, Gail Parker.
It is a reminder that angel protectors are all around; sometimes they
have wings AND beaks.
We invite you to e-mail this week's newsletter in its entirety to others
who might enjoy it.
Animal blessings,
Allen & Linda Anderson

STORY OF THE WEEK
SPARROWS HAD THEIR EYES ON ME
By Gail Parker
Katie, my Irish setter, and I have made friends with a small flock of
sparrows and one grackle who tags along with the others. Every so
often, on our walk around the neighborhood, I crush a peanut with my
shoe for the sparrows and grackle. People get a real kick out of seeing
us walk by with this parade of birds in tow.
The sparrows usually walk or fly very low and even cross the streets
with us. If I ignore them for too long, one or two will fly by my head
and gently brush my hair with his feather or fly right up in front of my
face to remind me they are there.
One morning, Katie and I happened to walk too close to a mockingbird's
nest. Both parents were sitting on the overhead wire. They swooped down
to attack us as we passed. But as soon as the littler birds saw what
the bigger ones were doing, our sparrow friends flew in between and
blocked the mockingbirds, keeping them from going after us.
After the initial attack the mockingbirds never bothered us again
although they would watch us from the wires whenever we walked by that
spot. To make peace, I would drop a couple peanuts for them. I
understood that they wanted to protect their young. The sparrows just
needed to let them know that we are their friends too.
I thought it was amazing that those little sparrows would be so loyal to
us. It has been almost three years now, and the mockingbirds have never
bothered us again.
BIO:
Gail, Carl, and the Parker gang (Katie, Rocky, Princess, Magic, and
Misty) live in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Visit
http://hometown.aol.com/rebelslair/myhomepage/photo.html to see "In
Memory of Renegade My Heart Dog Katie (Rebels Lair Kateri)." Gail's
mottos are, "Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints,
kill nothing but time," and "Rescue: it's your responsibility!"
SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT:
The Bible says that God has his eye on the sparrow. Are there sparrows
and other creatures who have their eyes on you and bring gifts when you
need them?
