A "101 Best Websites for Writers"
Choice by Writer's Digest, May 2005

Dear Writing Friends,

Welcome to a special edition of the Writing on the Run Tip of the Week.

We want to more thoroughly introduce you to our new book, RESCUED:
Saving Animals from Disaster. Because it contains messages and
information that we believe are vitally important for saving the lives
of people and animals, we are offering a special edition of our weekly
newsletter.

If saving animals' lives is important to you, we ask that you become a
champion for this book and its messages this week. Consider buying it
for yourself, family, friends, coworkers, and associates. Order it to
sell as a fundraiser for animal organizations or at animal shelter gift
shops.

RESCUED is designed to interest the general public in supporting animal
rescue with volunteerism and donations. The book contains interviews
with animal-loving celebrities -- Tippi Hedren, Rue McLanahan, Molly
Sims, Joe Mantegna, Tiffani Thiessen, Dee Wallace, Brigitte Bardot -- as
well as edge-of-the seat stories that involve Oprah Winfrey and Matthew
McConaughey. Its foreword is by US Senator John Ensign, named 2005
Legislator of the Year by the Humane Society of the United States.

Among hundreds of topics, RESCUED devotes chapters to:

*** busting through stereotypes of animal rescue volunteers and
organizations and putting to rest the notion that they only help animals
and not people

*** disaster preparedness for pets, farm, ranch, and zoo animals

*** how to train or choose a career in animal rescue

*** dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder in animal rescue
volunteers

*** the future of animal shelters, breed rescue, and sanctuaries

*** crucial lessons learned from Hurricane Katrina animal rescue efforts

*** sixteen pages of color photos that will make you feel as if you are
there in the midst of rescuing animals and feeling their gratitude.

You can read more at www.rescuedsavinganimals.net. The website includes
the Table of Contents and pointers for preparing your pets for
emergencies that we learned from our interviews with hundreds of animal
rescuers and disaster survivors. You can order RESCUED online right now
at Amazon.com.

TIP OF THE WEEK

Excerpted from RESCUED: Saving Animals from Disaster by Allen and Linda
Anderson. Copyright 2006. All rights reserved. Reprinted with
permission.

The Mississippi River, which begins as a trickle in Itasca State Park in
our state of Minnesota, builds into the mighty joining of many rivers
until it flows through the states of Mississippi and Louisiana into the
Gulf of Mexico.

As we sat near the source of the Mississippi during the winter of
2005-6, writing this book, our thoughts and hearts followed the flow of
the river to the sea. We are connected by nature to the steamy, humid
hurricane zone. We imagined the bowl of New Orleans, where floodwaters
drowned out a thriving, colorful city, so different from the solid,
built-on-granite environment where we live.

When the Gulf Coast endured winds and floods, it sent shock waves
through the entire length of the Mississippi River back to us. We heard
the cries of the people, the barking of their dogs, the mewing of their
cats, the surreal stillness of their fleeing wildlife.

BIO:
Allen and Linda Anderson are founders of the Angel Animals Network,
inspirational speakers, and authors of books about the benefits and
complexities of human-animal relationships. They and the publisher of
RESCUED are donating a portion of the proceeds from the sale of this
book to animal rescue organizations.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT:

What is the connection you hope to have with your readers as you
continue writing on the run?

RESCUED ENDORSEMENTS/REVIEWS

From Booklist:
"The volunteers who waded into the devastation left in Hurricane
Katrina's wake came in all sizes and shapes and redefined our notion of
hero. Many of these unlikely champions scooped endless shovels of poop,
distributed truckloads of food and clean water, and provided comfort and
kindness to animals whose world had blown apart. They worked against
Brobdingnagian odds: hundreds of thousands of frightened, starving
animals owners were forced to leave behind and little space in which to
care for the abandoned pets.

"Allen and Linda Anderson extensively interviewed the men and women who
came to rescue four-legged, finned, and feathered victims of Katrina.
The result is a treatise full of practical suggestions for dealing with
stranded animals, meeting their housing and medical needs, and,
ultimately, reuniting them with their owners. Aftermath stories will
change public policy, and every pet owner should read the Andersons'
book and develop their own private plan for the safety of their nonhuman
companions."

"Animal rescue had a defining moment after Hurricane Katrina. Widespread
media coverage showing thousands of stranded animals helped to bring
about the largest animal rescue effort in history and raised the
public's awareness of the bond between the companion animal and his or
her human family. RESCUED serves as a reminder that saving animals'
precious lives is not only noble but also a moral imperative."
--Gretchen Wyler, vice president of the Humane Society of the United
States (Hollywood Office) and retired executive producer of the Genesis
Awards

"This book offers vital, in-the-trenches information for saving animals'
lives, gleaned from hundreds of animal rescue organizations, experts,
and volunteers. RESCUED inspires individuals, agencies, and the nation
to take care of animals when disaster strikes and to make rescuing
animals a vital part of healthy and enlightened communities. By relating
powerful animal rescue and reunion stories, the Andersons remind us all
to cherish the human-animal bond by preserving it. Read it and reap!"
--Dr. Marty Becker, resident veterinarian on GOOD MORNING AMERICA and
author of THE HEALING POWER OF PETS

"A must-read that I couldn't put down, RESCUED will move you to action."
--Marc Bekoff, professor of biology at the University of Colorado and
editor of the ENCYCLOPEDIA OF ANIMAL BEHAVIOR

"American Humane applauds the Andersons' tireless efforts to pay homage
to the hundreds of individuals from scores of animal welfare groups who
gave so much to rescue the animal victims of Hurricane Katrina."
--Marie Belew Wheatley, president and CEO, American Humane Association

"Through firsthand accounts of the sweeping tragedy of Hurricane
Katrina, this indispensable primer on disaster response and support
networks melts away the notion that a cat or dog is anything less than a
family member."
--Jonathan Balcombe, author of PLEASURABLE KINGDOM: Animals and the
Nature of Feeling Good

"Compelling, fascinating, and most important -- highly moral."
--Ben Stein, author, actor, commentator
