Writing on the Run Tip of the Week

A "101 Best Websites for Writers"
Choice by Writer's Digest, May 2005
Dear Writing Friends,
Welcome to Writing on the Run Tip of the Week.
Is it important to support other writers?
We think this type of largess is imperative to becoming a published
author.
When we first started our Angel Animals writing projects, we went to
book events by authors around town. We visualized what it would be like
when we had our own events. We learned what kinds of presentations held
the attendees' attention and which ones were downright boring.
Supporting other writers with our presence and purchases seemed to be
part of paying our dues to the writing gods.
Could you find a writer to support this week as part of your
writing-on-the-run journey?
We'd love to meet you. Our first book event will be on Thursday,
September 28, 7:00 p.m., Barnes & Noble, 3000 Eden Prairie Center, Eden
Prairie, Minnesota 55344, Info: 952-944-5683. This will be a
multi-media presentation with special guests who are animal rescuers.
Remember, life is your page.
Today's Tip of the Week is about successfully drawing writing
experiences from real life.
We hope these tips bring you closer to achieving your writing goals and
inspire you to share your own great ideas for how to enjoy writing, even
when life gets busy.
We invite you to e-mail this week's tip in its entirety to, other
writers who might benefit from it.
Sincerely,
Allen and Linda Anderson

TIP OF THE WEEK
LIBRARIES OF LIFE
By Cyra Miles
I keep one folder in my computer and label it as "Libraries of Life."
When I am drained of ideas to write, I think of my colleague and the way
she handled the temper of a raging boss or I describe the teenager next
to me in the bus who seems to be out of the world. And sometimes, I make
imaginary conclusions to my writing or the reasons for the peculiar
behavior of the boy in the bus.
With such ideas for writing exercises, it helps me develop my
imagination and ability to be more descriptive.
BIO:
Cyra Miles is in her twentieth something. She finds writing as a
sanctuary for her thoughts and an intellectual bliss.
SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT:
Could you start a "Libraries of Life" folder to stimulate writing about
characters and topics with that undeniable ring of truth?

WRITING ON THE RUN QUOTES OF THE WEEK
There is no royal path to good writing; and such paths as exist do not
lead through neat critical gardens, various as they are, but through the
jungles of self, the world, and of craft.
--Jessamyn West
"I try to leave out the parts that people skip."
--Elmore Leonard
"Each man has his own way. After all, most writing is done away from
the typewriter, away from the desk. I'd say it occurs in the quiet,
silent moments, while you're walking or shaving or playing a game or
whatever, or even talking to someone you're not vitally interested in.
You're working, your mind is working, on this problem in the back of
your head."
--Henry Miller

RESCUED ENDORSEMENTS/REVIEWS
"The Anderson's have placed animals center stage and taught us their
value. This must-read, riveting account helps us understand that
Hurricane Katrina caused the evolution of both the human and animal
spirit."
--Barbara J. Gislason, Chair, American Bar Association TIPS Animal Law
Committee

HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR 100-WORD WRITING ON THE RUN IDEA
FOR THE TIP OF THE WEEK:
Mail to: writingo-@aol.com with your best 100-word idea for making
time and space to write. Include a 25-word bio. If we publish your
idea in the newsletter, you will receive a byline and the bio in which
you can mention your own writing projects. For
those of you who are starting to write, this is a good way to get a
quick publication credit. For seasoned writers, it's a generous way to
share your knowledge with struggling starters.
