Angel Animals Story of the Week
February 4, 2007
Visit us at www.angelanimals.net
Dear Friends of Angel Animals,
Welcome to the Angel Animals Story of the Week.
This week, we are marveling at and being grateful for our yellow
cockatiel Sunshine. In Minnesota today, it is 35 degrees below zero.
But in our home, it is always spring.
This is because Sunshine sings such lovely songs. His compositions
cause the imagination to trip off to sun-drenched fields, warm breezes,
and flowers blooming. When you have a bird who is as operatic as this
little fellow, your home is blessed with perpetual springtime.
Many of you may have heard or read the news story this week about the
German shepherd dog. He pulled a woman out of a wrecked car, dragged
her to the highway, and held her upright so she could call for help from
passing motorists. The woman renamed the dog Hero.
The story seemed appropriate on the weekend that we are announcing a new
contest to search for hero, service, and working dogs that could be
honored. See the announcement below and begin writing your stories to
send them for the contest. We are so excited to be reading about dogs
who have found their purpose in life.
Also, please notice an announcement below about our publisher, New World
Library, offering a 20 percent discount on ALL of their books. We are
mentioning it because New World Library has been wonderful about
publishing and promoting our series of books for all of you.
We hope you enjoy this week's story about a kitten who chose to accept
the deal that a loving family offered to him.
Email this newsletter in its entirety to your animal loving friends and
encourage them to sign up for our weekly publication. They will be
joining a terrific community of thousands of like-minded from people
around the world.
Animal blessings,
Allen & Linda Anderson

STORY OF THE WEEK
HOWIE ACCEPTS THE DEAL
By Sandra Dudzic
Howie, or as my husband and I call him, Howie Monster, chose us in a
very unusual way. He was left in a tomato box outside my place of work
one morning in September 2006. When my coworkers and I opened the box,
we found a black kitten who could fit into the palm of my hand.
Being a lover of cats, and already having nine at home who we rescued, I
knew immediately that I needed to help this kitten. I took him home as a
foster kitten, promising my husband that he was only temporary. After I
nursed him back to health, we would find a good home for him.
Our vet told me that the kitten was only about three weeks old, weighed
thirteen ounces, and was very sick. The vet could not figure out what
was wrong with the kitten and told me not to get my hopes up for the
little guy's survival. The kitten didn't know how to eat and would not
even suckle from a syringe. I had the vet show me how to tube-feed to
give him the best possible chance at life.
Two weeks of getting up every two hours and three trips to the emergency
room later, the "temporary kitty," as my husband called him, was finally
given a chance of survival. Almost three weeks into the routine of tube
feeding, the kitten started to move his mouth in a chewing gesture. I
immediately put kitten food around him, and he chowed down as if he had
been eating normally for years!
Over the next few weeks, he steadily grew stronger and "temporary kitty"
became Howie. One night when my husband and I were watching Deal or No
Deal on television, a show that Howie Mandel hosts, the kitten was
staring at the screen. So we named him Howie.
He earned the nickname of Howie Monster because after he was given a
clean bill of health and his personality began to show, he became a
lunatic. He bounced around the house and jumped on everything, having
to explore the whole world around him. He loved to play with my dog and
other cats and never stopped getting into trouble.
Howie Monster is now six months old and going strong. His perseverance
taught me never to give up hope and to persevere over the odds.
