A "101 Best Websites for Writers"
Choice by Writer's Digest, May 2005
Dear Writing Friends,
Welcome to Writing on the Run Tip of the Week.
Last week we had a wonderful experience when our local Barnes & Noble
asked our friend and poet extraordinaire, Aubrey Forbes, to conduct a
poetry workshop in honor of National Poetry Month. Aubrey asked Linda
to assist him.
So there we were, gathered together in a corner of the bookstore,
sharing examples, ideas, and exercises to stimulate poetry writing. The
highlight for us was to see young people at this workshop. One
eight-year-old girl brought a journal in which she had been saving her
poems. She specializes in Haiku.
For those of you concerned about the future of literature, this
celebration of poetry by young and old can serve to assure you that all
is well.
Please read the announcement below about the new radio program featuring
our longtime friend and pioneer of animals and spirituality, Susan
Chernak McElroy. We hope you will support her new endeavor.
Remember, life is your page.
This week's tip provides a creative twist on simultaneously pondering
problems and finding grist for your writing-on-the-run mill.
We hope these tips bring you closer to achieving your writing goals and
inspire you to share your own great ideas for how to enjoy writing, even
when life gets busy. Send us your timesaving and inspiring tips for
writing on the run.
We invite you to e-mail this week's tip in its entirety to, other
writers who might benefit from it.
Sincerely,
Allen and Linda Anderson

TIP OF THE WEEK
(First Published in Writing on the Run Tip of the Week, August 13, 2005)
WRITE DOWN THOUGHTS AND PROBLEMS
By Andrew Andabwa
No matter how busy my day is, I normally have some time dedicated to
thinking my thoughts. I think about problems and challenges in detail
with a kind of zoom-in, zoom-out effect. I found that it's possible to
use this time creatively and effectively in writing.
Just write down all the thoughts and problems you have at the time that
you are confronting them or thinking about them.
In the future these snippets you wrote could be the basis of a great
short story, novel, or even poem. Since the problems are real, the
writing that you will wrap around them will be equally real or grounded
in reality. And it will make for an interesting read.
Great writing is writing that just flows on its own. What better way is
there than combining your writing, problems, and thoughts -- all of
which you have a passion for. The resultant writing could be great
writing.

WRITING ON THE RUN QUOTES OF THE WEEK
"Every word written is a victory against death."
--Michel Butor
"Better to write for yourself and have no public, than to write for the
public and have no self."
--Cyril Connolly
"Life is what happens to a writer between drafts."
--Damon (aka Dennis R. Miller)
...who spent 25 years completing his novel THE PERFECT SONG.
"I believe that in a good collaboration, the authors bring their
strengths to the story; one author's strength cancels the other author's
weakness, and back and forth it goes."
--Jack Dann
"Storytelling is healing. As we reveal ourselves in story, we become
aware of the continuing core of our lives under the fragmented surface
of our experience. We become aware of the multifaceted, multichaptered
' I ' who is the storyteller. We can trace out the
paradoxical and even contradictory versions of ourselves that we create
for different occasions, different audiences... Most important, as we
become aware of ourselves as storytellers, we realize that what we
understand and imagine about ourselves is a story. And when we know all
this, we can use our stories to heal and make ourselves whole."
--Susan Wittig Albert
