Quote from an attendee:

"Keep up the good work. I feel this is THE conference to attend
for CF developers. I had to prove to my bosses here to send me and
the other cf developers. It is definitely a great investment for
companies to send their developers to because of the knowledge
they will gain when they come back. Its a win-win situation.
Hopefully I can get to go in 2007. I'm planning on it. "

* Frameworks Classes Contest!

Register for a Frameworks Pre-Conference Class by 1/21/07 and you will be
entered in a random drawing for a 1 GB Memory Stick

FB201 - Intermediate Fusebox 5
Full Day: Intermediate: - $449.00
Location: Bethedsa North Marriott

FB201 is for people who have already met Fusebox and want to
improve their skills with the new Fusebox 4.0 spec. Step up to
the next level with your Fusebox programming and save yourself
time and headaches when coding ColdFusion applications. Great for
team projects!

Instructor: Theo Rushin
Prerequisite: FB101 or similar basic Fusebox knowledge.

MG101 - Rapid Application Development with Model-Glue 2.0
Location: Bethesda North Marriott

In this class, we're going to write an online store in eight
hours. We'll be using Model-Glue 2.0, also known as "Unity," a
ground-up rewrite of the popular Model-Glue framework for
ColdFusion. Model-Glue 2.0 is the first ColdFusion framework to
provide scaffolding, the ability to automatically generate
Object-Oriented, database-driven applications. In this class,
we'll learn about the RAD capabilities this provides by using
Model-Glue, in conjunction with the Reactor ORM framework, to
create a functioning online store. We'll also learn a bit about
agile development methodologies as well as the ColdSpring framework.

Instructor: Joe Rinehart

These classes are held at the Bethesda North Marriott, cost is
$449 per person. The cost is not included in the Frameworks
Conference Registration. More details, go to
http://www.frameworksconference.com/pages/classes.cfm

-----------------
* Why should my boss send me to Frameworks Conference?

1. Framesworks such as Fusebox organize your code better,
dramatically reduce maintenance costs and reduce developer
headaches to boot. The money they save will more than payback the
cost of sending you to the conference.

2. Frameworks offer excellent support for team development --
even when developers are geographically disparate.

3. Frameworks such as Fusebox lower the cost of software
development by lowering the risk of failure. The Standish Group
reports that custom software built for in-house use suffers
failure on more than 50% of projects. Such high risk elevates the
cost of software. Fusebox's high success rate lowers the "risk
factor", thereby lowering the cost of developing software.

4. Modern organizations use frameworks - don't be left behind.
The US government is a big user of Fusebox and other frameworks.

5. Two full days of training usually costs around $800,
Frameworks early bird pricing is now only $399!

6. To buy books over 20 talks you can attend at Framework could
cost $50 each or $600. Again Frameworks is cheaper and you get
both a printed handbook and all the talks available as MP3s
directly after the event for free! In fact some of the topics
don't even have a book on them yet, so the only way to get this
info is at the conference!

7. Half the battle in programming can be knowing that a solution
exists at all. By seeing and hearing about a wide range of
techniques you will be prepared for future problems and be able
to solve them in less time!

8. The people you meet at Frameworks can help you by bouncing
ideas with you and for you to compare how your organization use
frameworks vs other organizations.

9. You can pick the brains of the 32 nationally known speakers
and ColdFusion authors who are speaking at the conference.

10. Since this is a smaller event, speakers have more time to
answer questions and interact with the audience.

Don't miss out on this fantasic Event!

* CFUnited Topics Announced (First List)

http://cfunited.com/2007/pages/topics.cfm

We've listed the first run of accepted topics today. We are
adding 18-20 more topics in the next couple months. Flex and
Scorpio topics will be added soon as well.

* Interview on "Designing Framework-Agnostic Models with
CFCs" with Brian Kotek

Michael Smith: This time we are talking with Brian Kotek about
his Frameworks-07 talk "Designing Framework-Agnostic Models with
CFCs". So why should a developer come to your session Brian?

Brian Kotek: It's great that people are embracing the Model-View-
Controller (MVC) pattern to help build their applications. Often,
their Controller layer is handled by Fusebox, Mach-II, or Model-
Glue. However, I think its important to distinguish between what
these Controllers should be doing and what logic should be kept
out of the Controller and inside the Model layer. Without some
careful thought, it's easy for these two parts of the system to
"bleed into" each other. I'm going to give a quick overview of
MVC and then offer some advice about how to keep your Model
neutral, regardless of which Controller you want to use.

MS: Why would one want to spend extra effort to keep their Model
"neutral"? What does that mean?

BK: Well, the easy answer is to keep the Model portable so that
it can be used with any Controller and View. Your Model shouldn't
know or care what framework you're using, and you should even be
able to swap frameworks with minimal pain. Also, it doesn't
really need to be "extra effort". If you keep this goal in mind
when you design your application, it really isn't any extra work
at all.

MS: But is that very realistic? How often do people switch
Controller frameworks after an application is already written?

BK: It's probably uncommon, but it definitely does happen.
However, the point of keeping your Model independent of your
Controller means a lot more than just being able to switch
frameworks. By keeping their responsibilities clear and defined,
you make maintenance easier on yourself and any future developers
who need to update the application. You also make it easier to
allow completely different interfaces to your model. Think Flex,
AJAX, or web services. The more clear, defined, and self-
contained your Model is, the easier it is to leverage it from any
external system. If, on the other hand, your Controller has a
bunch of logic in it that really should be encapsulated within
the Model, trying to use that for something like web services is
going to be difficult.

MS: Do you plan to give a demonstration of these ideas during
your session?

BK: I'm going to show a simple application where a single Model
and View drive a Fusebox, Mach-II, and Model-Glue application, in
addition to a web service interface that completely bypasses the
Controller.

MS: Sounds cool - see you there

You can see more interviews at
http://www.frameworksconference.com/ Frameworks 2007 is Thu
2/1/07 - Fri 2/2/07 in Bethesda MD, just outside Washington DC.
It costs 399 until January 5th

Designing Framework-Agnostic Models with CFCs
*************************

One of the most important elements of designing a software system
is encapsulation. Many developers are leveraging the MVC pattern
to organize their applications, often using a public or home-
grown controller such as Mach-II, Fusebox, or Model-Glue. With
proper care, one can design a model layer that is completely
independent of the framework being used. This not only allows for
more flexibility within the current system, but also for
completely changing the chosen framework if necessary, with no
change to the underlying model. This session will introduce MVC
and provide tips and advice for encapsulating your model layer
regardless of which framework you choose.

Speaker Bio:

Brian Kotek has been developing applications with ColdFusion for
ten years. He's worked as a consultant and contractor on a wide
range of projects for private industry and the federal
government. He also has taught classes and given presentations to
both private companies, government clients, and at industry
conferences. Brian is a Certified Advanced ColdFusion Developer
and a member of Team Fusebox.
