Dear Becky,
I wonder if you can give me advice on how to stop gerbils chewing on
their cage ( wire bars covered with plastic coating). I have tried
giving our two three month old female gerbils other things to chew but
nothing seems to stop them from going for the cage bars. Is this

Q2 Don't even try the spilt cage method they still try and attack each other and end up hurting them selves. You will need separate tank quite away from each other I have a brown and white gerbils they live together for a while they started fighting because we introduce 2 babies a male/female. This causes them to fight. I did a lot of research and everyone said that they could put them back together by split tanking and put them together in a neutral territory we tried this for months and they just ended up hurting each other or themselves. We know have I in the front room and the other in the backroom well away from each other and they could still smell each other when they were in the same room and they started biting us. We have now has them separate for 2 months and they love it they are very happy they look more happy now then they did together, they are both full of life and have stopped biting. But we do have to keep an eye out for the white one as he lost a finger and a bite of his mouth. He recovered very well from the fight and it was not clear who started it until we tried them back together. Then it became clear it was the brown one who was marking his territory.
Watch out for them hiding or blocking the other gerbils way
Please take my advice if you love your gerbils do not try and put them back together. Let them have there own space

Okay guys, I know this is something that I could probably have gotten
answers to through a search, but the Topica Search function isn't
working. Here is the situation:
We got a pair of males in mid-April (5 months ago). When we got them,
the tank at the pet store said "3 yr old gerbils". We don't personally
think that they are three years old, but they are defintely over 1 yr
old. They have gotten along very well, with no more than the standard
squeeking and "play fighting". That is up until today.
I saw them up this morning and noticed that Dillon, our white one had
discolored patch of fur at his neck on the right side. I called for my
husband and on examination, my fears were proven, it was dried blood.
Marty, our agouti one had a similar spot on his neck on the left side.
It looked old and they appeared to be okay.
We had changed their cage (20-gallong long) about a week ago and added a
terra cotta saucer to try to help with long claws and a small wooden
house. The existing structures in the cage were their larger wooden
nest house and a wooden log tunnel. These two items have been their
since their initial set-up, with only the house being changed for an
identical one when it becomes dirty.
We gave them fresh food and went about getting ready for our day. I
heard a scuffle and we emerged to find a gerb-ball going on. My husband
separated them to find Marty with a fresh wound to his neck on the left
side. It was bleeding quite a bit, but stopped within a reasonable
amount of time. We immediately put Marty into the 10-gallon cage we use
for them when we are cleaning the main cage.
Now here are the questions. 1) since they have drawn blood, is there
any chance for a reconcilation? I have not read much that sounds
promising. 2) how long can they be separated and still have a chance
for making up without a split cage? The bedding in both cages smells of
both boys and we'll continue to move some back and forth to insure this.
3) If we try a split cage and it doesn't work, is it best to keep them
as a split cage or put them in two separate 10-gallon tanks? 4) Should
we put antibiotic ointment on their wounds or get antibiotics for their
water?
All help is appreciated. We have never dealt with fights resulting in
blood shed.
