The new, 2004 edition is even better. My book, The 101 Best Graphic
Novels (NBM, 2001), has a bit about literacy as well & may be useful.

Don't have his books here with me at the office, but you also want to
check out Stephen Krashen's work. He's done the most work on pleasure
reading and literacy, and he's also done the most work on comics &
literacy. He's retired now but still has a couple doctoral candidates
he's advising, including one who's doing a study right now on comics
and
ESOL instruction in Taiwan.

POWER OF THE READING is the first title I read. It has a great
bibliography covering the [relatively little] studies that show
positive
correlations between comics reading and literacy levels. The book
debunks the whole notion of "junk reading." He's probably the
strongest
advocate for hi-lo out there.

Cool dude with some strong ideas. Plus, he loves comics!

Subject: {GNIE-L} Statistics

Following the thought of the previous thread, does anyone know a
website
/ publication with statistics relating to Graphic Novels and literacy
/
performance. Thought it might be useful to encourage the teachers I
work with to explore these further.

Favorite quote from an English Teacher: "Graphic Novels... huh."
