ANNOUNCING:
1st Annual Workshop on Children's and Adolescents' Literature
March 3, 2005
Comics in the Classroom: Multiple Literacies Through Graphic Novels
Today's school students are reading, both for pleasure and information,
a new form of multiple literacy called a graphic novel. A graphic novel
is 1) a sophisticated story driven by visual art and supported by text;
2) a book length comic; 3) American Manga; 4) Multiple layers of
learning using symbols, pictures, and words; 5) a self-contained story
that uses a combination of text and artwork. Participants in this
workshop will
explore the benefits of using a pop culture phenomenon in a traditional
classroom
explore the relationship between text and art in graphic storytelling
see how this type of storytelling can contribute to an expanding
understanding of multiple literacies
examine ways the graphic novel can connect to writing in the classroom
consider the use of sequential art with special populations such as ESL
students or students with disabilities, and
work with colleagues to create an interdisciplinary lesson using
graphic novels provided.
