Howdy. My name's David Seidman, a comics writer and marketing guy, and
I've been hosting a monthly dinner for people in the Los Angeles area
who work in comic books.
The next dinner will take place on THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 22, at 7 P.M.
This month, the topic is GETTING ATTENTION FOR YOUR WORK. Writers and
artists need publishers, publishers need retailers, and all of us need
the news media -- not to mention every potential reader we can get.
There are some well-established ways to get their attention (convention
season starts this month with the New York Comic-Con) and some new ways,
too (ComicSpace, anyone?).
• Writers and artists, bring in tales of how your work caught your
editor's eye.
• Retailers, tell us about in-store signings and other events that
pulled customers into your store. (Free Comic Book Day is coming,
folks.)
• Publishers, tell us how you've publicized your publications.
• Editors, marketers, agents, distributors, webmasters -- you've got
stories, too.
If you're not familiar with this event, the dinner is -- well, a
dinner. Comics folk gather on the last Thursday of each month to eat,
drink, gossip, laugh, show off new work (if you're so inclined), and so
on. It's a good place to network; people have built friendships and
business arrangements with others they've met at these dinners. The
food's good, too.
This month, we're trying a new location: HOP LI, a Chinese seafood
restaurant at 10974 WEST PICO BOULEVARD in West L.A., near the
intersection of the 10 and 405 freeways. (There should be a map at the
end of this e-mail.) Openlist gives Hop Li three stars out of a
possible four, Yahoo! scores it at 4.5 out of 5, and Citysearch gives it
a 9.3 out of 10. The food is reasonably priced (most dishes cost less
than ten bucks), and there should be plenty of free parking. What's
more, the place has plenty of round tables, which should make
conversation among ourselves easy and fun.
Please forward the news about this event to colleagues in the comics
business, even (or especially) if you can't make it to the dinner
yourself. The more people we get, the more fun we have.
See you there, I hope!
