Wave Vidmar is off the ice.
The 39-year-old adventurer from Fremont featured in recent stories in
The Bee had planned to make a solo trip from an ice mass off Siberia to
the North Pole. He cut short his expedition when it became clear he
could not complete the distance in time for pickup by the end of the
month. He was picked up by helicopter on Saturday, Day 51 of his
expedition.
Vidmar had traveled 341 miles, and he was 281 miles from the pole. On
Sunday, he was flown to the North Pole, according to a spokesman.
He was back on land on Monday, staying in a small town in northern
Norway, and is expected to reach London in the next few days. You can
read Vidmar's account of the expedition at www.northpolesolo.com.
