NUMBER OF CLASSROOMS:
-- No limit

AGE RANGE:
-- 10 to 15 years

TARGET AUDIENCE:
-- Anyone

PROJECT SUMMARY:
-- This project taps into some of the exciting applications of the
Internet in education by having students access real time ocean data.
The students will track an actual ship at sea, determine its
destination, and predict when it will arrive at its port of call. In
addition, students will use the engineering design process to design,
create, and test a travel bag.

FULL PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
-- Have you ever dreamed of being a stowaway? Well, here is your
chance to get your feet wet with an adventure onboard a real ship
sailing the high seas!

This multidisciplinary Internet-based learning experience has been
designed to expose students to real world problem solving through unique
uses of instructional technologies. In particular, students will use
real time data from the Internet to track a real ship at sea, determine
its destination and predict when it will arrive. In addition, they will
have the opportunity to monitor the weather conditions at sea and
predict when rough weather might impact on the ship's arrival time.

Students will also use the Engineering Design Process (EDP) to design,
create and test their own travel bag.

OBJECTIVES:
-- Upon the completion of the project, students will be able to:
identify the locations of the ship for the past several hours, plot the
location of their ship in their map, determine the direction of the
ship, predict what city it will dock in (port-of-call), determine the
distance traveled and time it took to travel, calculate the average
speed of the ship, and predict the ship's arrival to the port-of-call.
Students will also study the weather conditions that might impact the
ship's voyage.
