Deadly or Crucial Drug - Herbal Interactions

By Eva Almeida,

More and more people are turning to alternative therapies
to treat a variety of ailments ranging from osteoarthritis
to the common cold. In many cases, herbal preparations,
when taken as directed, can be safe and effective.

On the other hand, mixing certain herbs with drugs can prove
fatal or disastrous! Please make sure you check with your
pharmacist or doctor if you are on prescription medication
and you plan to take ANY herb. You may not realize the
potential for the herb to interact with your medication
and in some instances -- it can be a deadly mistake.

I will give you a couple of examples of where you can
get into problems when drugs and herbs are mixed.

St. John's Wort is commonly used for treating depression
or anxiety with good results (reported to be used in
Europe as a substitute for Prozac.) Since it works
on the hormone, Serotonin, which affects our moods,
it must not be used with medications that also affect
Serotonin such as Paxil and Prozac -- even watch cough
syrups with DM (which is dextromethorphan since it mildly
affects serotonin.) If used together, it may bring on
Serotonin Syndrome (changes in mental status, agitation,
tremor, shivering, and even death in some cases.)

St. John's Wort has also been reported to decrease the
effectiveness of birth control pills -- some have
reported up to 50% decrease (I find that hard to believe
but even a 5-10% decrease can be significant!)

Another significant interaction to watch for is exhibited
by patients on warfarin (Coumadin - blood thinner.) When
they take certain herbs such as garlic, gingko biloba,
ginger, or ginseng, they can experience an additive blood
thinning effect. This is not recommended and may lead
to complications associated with prolonged bleeding.
Many herbal preparations may contain a combination of
3 or 4 of these together making them even more dangerous
to a person on warfarin. It is crucial to consult with
your physician when taking warfarin with other herbs.

I hope this gives you a small appreciation for the possible
dangers associated with mixing drugs with herbs without
checking their potential for interacting.

In future articles, I will be pointing out more interactions
that can occur between drugs, herbs, and food.

Hope for Alzheimer's

Alzheimer's disease poses one of the most difficult
health challenges imaginable for coping. Especially
for the care-taker, since the victim loses cognizance
of reality. Opposite to rearing a baby, the behavior
of an Alzheimer's patient wanes instead of maturates
daily. Many care centers now have special lock-in units
for Alzheimer's patients who require observation around
the clock. And USA Today recently reported that
Alzheimer's is an epidemic which is projected to affect
1 of 2 Americans by 2025!

Two years ago my wife noticed that her 88 year old mom
living alone in a nearby state was making strange
remarks during their phone conversations. Like "the
living room is now full of kids from the neighborhood"
and "wonder who is knocking at the door at 11 p.m."
Upon realizing that something was wrong, we brought her
to live with us. Our family physician immediately
diagnosed her as in the 7th or 8th stage of Alzheimer's.
Her two physicians back home had prescribed devastating
drugs for her symptoms while failing to diagnose the
disease. Those drugs were creating hostility, confusion
and violence. Once she thrust a kitchen knife through
her new blouse in frustration over inability to button
a sleeve. She wrestled us (almost successfully!) in
resisting a visit to the hospital emergency room. She
fell numerous times in a dazed stupor. She wandered
outside into the cold without clothes until we installed
deadlocks on the doors. She was clearly headed for the
professional services of a nursing home. But my wife
refused to give her up.

We had recently become distributors for a division of
Rexall Sundown which manufacturers unique nutritional
blends of wellness medicine, and decided to access
whatever available all-natural products could be used
by an Alzheimer's patient. We immediately began using
a product called Calming Blend for daytime and evening
anxiety, and another called Calmplex to induce sleep.
But of profound significance was Cogno Blend, an
inexpensive product based on medical studies with Cat's
Claw. A report was recently given at an Alzheimer's
symposium on Rexall's patented formulation of this
recognized herbal. (The research brief and recognized
medical studies behind this unique product may be
examined at

https://www.rexall.com/storefront/item_detail.asp?FV_ITEM_NUMBER=6003&SESSION_ID=116100265&FV_PAGE_CODE=item_detail&ITEM_GROUP=CH_MENTAL

Cogno Blend removes the beta amyloid deposits on the
brain cells caused by the disease. With the cooperation
of our family physician (who, like most doctors, are
untrained in the field of nutritionals and herbs), we
removed Judi's mom from all prescription drugs except a
mild anti-depressant. Distinguished cardiovascular
specialist and friend in a distant state, Dr.Raif Tawakol,
who uses Cogno Blend in his practice, advised us that
this natural agent produces results corresponding to how
early treatment is initiated. And of course, we had become
aware of the disease in its latest stages. So we didn't
know what we could expect from our substitution of
all-natural supplements for prescription drugs.

The immediate consequence of our decision was not dramatic
nor dazzling even though in less than a month we noticed
some behavioral changes. Over several months we
experienced gradual improvement. Now after two years, our
physician characterizes her as in excellent health and
drastically improved over her condition when he first
examined her. She is still living at home with us rather
than institutionalized. She immensely enjoys riding in the
car with us every day to my wife''s retail shop where she
converses with customers (even if unintelligibly). She
loves going with us wherever we go, but especially to eat
at local restaurants several times a week. We take her
with us each month to a special musical entertainment
venue at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium, original home of
The Grand Ole Opry. She takes in everything, and is often
clapping and dancing with the music by the end of the
evening. She was always an outgoing, friendly person, and
will often enter a group of people speaking to everyone
and joking. Her former sharp mind is usually still alert
and her sense of humor intact, as evidenced in the way
she will occasionally create some rhyme in response to a
remark. Once I kidded, "Willie, Willie, you're so fine...,"
and she quickly retorted, "I'm the best all the time."
Country-born-and-raised in the hills of Tennessee, she
assumed the care of her little brother and sisters after
her mother died when she was only 10. She picked cotton,
prepared the meals, and washed clothes in a wood-fired
kettle. Once she said, tongue-in-cheek, "I wish I had a
good education so they wouldn't just call me a pretty
girl." Another time she asked me to raise the car window
while we were driving because I was "taking the beauty
out of her hair." The other day we passed a jogger in the
car, and she observed that the girl was "trying to run to
get some flesh off of her." Even though she has lost most
of her memory and is confused about names, she clearly
recognizes that she is loved and reacts accordingly. She
often chatters with us about people and events - in much
the same manner as she did when she was younger - and even
though her utterances are now unintelligible, we easily
sense her meaning and interpret the attitudes and feelings
behind the words.

In summation, our personal observation of her condition
is that the Alzheimer's disease has stabilized, as distinct
from the usual mental decline associated with the advancement
in age of a 90 year old. Even her anxiety and sleeplessness
have declined so that we seldom have the need for Calmplex
and Calming Blend. And very important to us, she is not in
a nursing home where the atmosphere would spiral her condition
downward.

The medical profession is divided over the possibility of
whether brain cells can regenerate after damage. Dr.Tawakol
has observed actual reversal of Alzheimer's symptoms using
Cogno Blend among some of the patients in his practice
which he attributes to the regeneration process. However,
if the disease spreads like uncontrollable cancer before
treatment begins, he compares the irreparable damage of
the nerve endings to the short-circuiting of stripped
electrical wires. This suggests that early treatment holds
the greatest potential for either stabilization or reversal,
and that advance prevention is even more preferable. Because
of this difficult family experience, we have been motivated
to use this product as a preventative measure.

QUICK VITAMIN & MINERAL CHECKLIST.

Make sure your trust is with the right company.

Because there are no regulations in the nutritional
supplement market, it can be very difficult to know if you
are in fact getting the best value for your money and your
health.

Using this checklist could help you find a good supplement that
fits your needs. Compare this information with your present
products and see if you are getting value for your Vitamin &
Mineral money.

Pretend that you are standing in the health food store or
drugstore and you want to buy some vitamins and minerals.
I guarantee that unless you are an expert, you will be
very confused and frustrated.

So pick up a bottle of what might be classified as nutritional
supplement. (I am not speaking here about individual vitamins
or minerals, although the same process could be applied to
them.)

The label should say something like:

"LABORATORY TESTED, QUALITY GUARANTEED, MEETS USP SPECIFICATIONS
FOR POTENCY, UNIFORMITY, DISINTEGRATION WHERE APPLICABLE."

That will reassure you that you are indeed getting the quality
you need.

But read on.

Do they have the real name, real address and phone number of
the company on the label so you can contact them yourself?

Does the company guarantee potency?

Are the contents guaranteed?

Are there expiration dates on the bottle?

Are the real amounts of the ALL the nutritional ingredients on
the label?

Do you supplements dissolve or do they just "travel through"?

Does the label say "natural"? (Did you know that it is legal to
say "natural" even though they just have 4% of the natural
product in the container? Are mushrooms natural? Beware of the
term.)

Recognise that price doesn't indicate quality. Know that the
cost of the scientific manufacturing Does increase the cost.
So don't give your body's nutritional needs to the lowest-priced
bottle.

Make a phone call. Some of this research will take a phone call
to the head office, but it's worth the effort and peace of
mind. Let me put this another way. I am a nurse, registered
with my professional organization. Would you like me to look
after your loved ones if I wasn't? Isn't your health worthy of
the same degree of professionalism?

Ask the following questions:

Do they follow GMP? (Good Manufacturing Practices.) It would be
even better if they follow the standards for pharmaceuticals.
Ask if they do. (This means that the company uses the same high
standards as if they were producing a brand new drug.

Then you would ask if they are an FDA-registered Manufacturing
facility. Stay with a company that chooses to meet the USP (US
Pharmacopoeia) requirements.

Does the company provide technical support?

If you sense that you are not getting good answers, thank them
and hang up. Find yourself another company. You've learned a lot
already from the exercise.

Yes, this is what to ask. Reputable companies will gladly help
you find answers.

CONCLUSION

In choosing a nutritional supplement, please consider that you
don't know what your body actually needs or how you could find
the required ingredients. Also, you wouldn't know how to
formulate the necessary product.

So your basic concern should include three things:

1. The company's ability to provide the expert scientific
    knowledge
2. The required quality of the manufacturing process,
3. The ingredients of the highest quality that allows the
cells require to grow and to remain healthy and vibrant.

                       Body Transformations
Simple Step-By-Step Instructions On How You Can Build
                       Your Best Body Ever!
                      by Dr. Robert Osgoodby

How To Build A Symmetrical Body

This month we will cover strategies on how to attain symmetry
and proper proportion. Even the top builders struggle to achieve
a perfectly symmetrical body. When I think of perfect symmetry,
one person comes to mind. In his prime, Frank Zane (a famous
body builder) was the definition of symmetry. He had no weak
muscle groups and everything was in exact proportion. Not only
was his upper body symmetrical to his lower body, but each body
part, right and left, looked like mirror images.

Everyone has at least one muscle group that needs a little more
work than the rest. For example, I can use more size in my
quadriceps, my right calf is not as chiseled as my left calf, and
my right bicep has more peak than my left. To work on symmetry
you need three things to get started: a mirror, a piece of paper,
and a pen.

Even though you probably already know what your weak areas are,
stand in front of a full length mirror and take a good hard look
at your body. Look at each muscle group and in writing make an
honest assessment. If your upper body looks great, but your legs
need work, write it down. If you are happy with your upper body
and legs but have a thick waist, write it down.

Next compare your right to your left. Most people who are right
handed, will have a right arm that is more developed and stronger
than their left. If you really want to see a great example of
this, look at a professional tennis player and compare their
racquet arm to their other arm. A professional soccer player who
is predominately right footed will usually have a larger more
developed right leg. Section by section, analyze your body and
in detail, write down your weak areas like I did in paragraph
number two.

After you have done your analysis, the next step is to come up
with a symmetry goal, and develop a written daily plan of action
to achieve your goal. Let's look at my symmetry goals and plan
of action as an example.

Goals:

Left Bicep - increase size and peak
Right Calf - increase size and definition
Right & Left Quadriceps - increase size and definition

Plan Of Action:

1. Since I train biceps twice a week, one day a week I only train
my left bicep (not my right) and work on peak exercises like
cable curls and dumbbell concentration curls.
2. Since I train calves twice a week, one day a week I only train
my right calf doing standing and seated calf raises.
3. To increase the size of my quads, I cut down my cardiovascular
exercise to only two days a week and I do it on leg days.
This gives my legs the proper recovery and growth time. I
also kicked up the intensity of my leg work outs and increased
my number of sets on each leg exercise from four to five.
4. To gain size in my legs, I increased my daily caloric intake
from 2,200 calories a day to 2,600 calories a day eating
healthy low fat foods. This can be easily done with a meal
replacement shake if you don't want to cook another meal.

I buy my supplements from Predator Sports and I highly recommend
their products and company. Their prices are about half of some
of their competitors, and their meal replacement shakes contain
the perfect combination of protein, carbohydrates, and the 29
essential vitamins, minerals, etc. for maintaining or increasing
your lean body mass while decreasing your body fat percentage.
You can get more information on their company or buy supplements
at predatorsports.com While your there also check out some of
their thermogenic fat burning supplements which help kick up your
metabolism and give you an extra edge while you are slashing your
body fat percentage. I particularly like (and use) their
thermobuterol which is a great natural fat burner.

After you modify your work out to get rid of the weak links, hit
it hard for three months with your new plan of action and get
back in front of the full length mirror with your paper and pen.
Re-evaluate your weak areas. At this time if needed, you can
modify your plan of action again. Let's say that my left bicep
is looking great, but my right calf and quadriceps still need a
little work. I would adjust my plan of action by going back to
my normal bicep routine, but sticking with the plan of action I
mapped out above for my quadriceps and right calf for another
month. Re-evaluate again and make adjustments - and again -
until you reach your symmetry goals.

For symmetry, it is also important that you train all muscle
groups. You don't want to look like the guy in the gym with the
muscular upper body and chicken legs. Don't forget forearms and
lower back! Forearms and lower back are the most ignored muscle
groups but they really help you in finishing your symmetrical
work of art. Training your forearms makes your arms more
proportional and noticeable. Training your lower back narrows
your waist and helps you chisel that "V" shaped back.

Announces Top Physician/Researcher in New Scientific Publication

OCTOBER 3, 2000 -- In the October 2000 issue of Anti-Aging
Medical News, an official scientific newsletter servicing a
physician readership in excess of 50,000 worldwide, Dr. Ronald
Klatz, Senior Fellow at Tufts University, President of the
10,000 member American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M,
Chicago, IL), and inventor/administrator of more than 100
US biotech patents, advances his longstanding thesis that
life expectancy projections based on pastcast models will
be quickly abandoned in favor of a new forecasting projection
of longevity that focuses on five emerging technologies which,
taken collectively, will be the singlemost important innovation
that delivers boundless vitality to humankind within the next
three decades.

Dr. Klatz's authoritative report on the future of human life
expectancy debunks pessimistic claims of a predetermined and
finite limit to human lifespan as advanced by S. Jay Olshansky,
demographer at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Olshansky,
whose statistics-centered, non-clinical research is underwritten
by the National Institute of Aging, is part of an arcane and
ineffective movement seeking to squelch the voice of forward-looking
physicians and scientists who embrace cutting-edge medical and
biotechnological advancements that will help us to achieve human
immortality. Olshansky, who since 1990 has clung to historical
statistical analyses purporting that the elimination of cancer,
heart disease, and diabetes would increase life expectancy only
to about age 85, and would proliferate disabling conditions such
as arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, and vision and hearing losses
in advanced age, is now contradicted by a highly reputable and
objective source. In a new study published by the prestigious
Science magazine (Sep 29 2000: 2366-2368), "Increase in Maximum
Life-Span in Sweden, 1861-1999," we learn that in Sweden, the
maximum age at death has risen from 100 years during the 1860s
to about 108 years during the 1990s. The study's authoring
team, demographers J. R. Wilmoth and L. J. Deegan of the
University of California/Berkeley along with H. Lundström,
and S. Horiuchi, acknowledge that "an intensification of
efforts … to prevent or even cure ailments such as coronary
heart disease, stroke, and cancer" has profoundly contributed
to "the more rapid rise in the maximum age since 1969."

In "Making the Quantum Leap to Human Immortality in the Year
2029" appearing in the October 2000 issue of Anti-Aging Medical
News, Dr. Klatz advances the concept of The Longevity Link, a
novel representation of the impact of five key biomedical
technologies on gains in human longevity.

According to Dr. Klatz's LEx Equation, medical knowledge and
technology doubles every 3.5 years and gains in human longevity
are directly proportional to the cumulative sum of advancements
in the biotech fields of:

* stem cells, giving rise to a supply of human cells, tissues, and
organs for use in acute emergency care as well as treatment of
chronic, debilitating disease

*cloning, a technique holding tremendous promise in producing
consistent organs, tissues, and proteins for biomedical use in humans

* nanotechnology, enabling scientists to use tiny tools to
manipulate human biology at its most basic levels

* artificial organs, making replacement body parts available

* digital cerebral interface, a technology to transfer one's
thoughts, sensory perceptions, emotions, personality, and
autonomic body responses -- to computer storage device,
enabling your memories and consciousness to survive in the event
of your physical death

Says Dr. Klatz, "The accelerating biotech revolution leads us
to the incontrovertible conclusion that human immortality --
lifespans beyond 120 years -- may well be delivered by the year
2029. The arrival at the Ageless Society is believed by leaders
in the government, commercial, and private sectors to be
the salvation and solution to the healthcare crisis in America."

As a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization, the American
Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M) is the only non-profit,
non-commercial, medical society in the world devoted to
eradicating the degenerative diseases of aging. Since its
inception seven years ago, the A4M has been the first and
only scientific nonprofit medical society to have forecast
the deliverance of human lifespans in excess of 100 years.
The 10,000 physician, scientist, and health practitioner
members of the A4M are forging a profound healthcare paradigm
shift that alleviates the mounting social, economic, and
medical woes otherwise anticipated to arrive with the
rapidly growing volume of an aging population.

The A4M sponsors The World Health Network, the Internet's #1
anti-aging portal, at www.worldhealth.net, as part of its
mission of promoting advocacy and awareness of this new
clinical science.
