Mon, August 4 - I Was Born With Two Tongues "The Homecoming Show." I Was
Born With 2 Tongues was born in Chicago, raised on the road, and comes
home to roost with a final "homecoming" show. A panAsian spoken word
group born of invisibility, fueled by the thirst to be who we are, and
sustained by powerful writing, the tongues feel blessed to have played a
small role in the reawakening of poetry as a way to tell our peoples'
stories. Featuring Emily Chang, Anida Yoeu Esguerra, Marlon Esguerra,

Wed, August 6 - Film: "Gaza Strip." This film pushes the viewer
headlong into the tumult of the Israeli-occupied Gaza, examining the
lives and views of ordinary Palestinians. The central character is
Mohammed Hejazi, a 13-year-old paperboy in Gaza City, one of the young
"stone-throwers" who risk their lives throwing rocks at Israeli tanks
across the barbwire fences. We also catch glimpses of his inner world:
his sense of hopelessness, his sorrow at the IDF killing of his best
friend, his conception of death. As the camera floats through the Gaza
Strip the viewer is flooded with images of the occupation. Screening
will begin with a brief introduction and wil conclude with an open
discussion and an introduction to some of the local groups currently
engaged in Palestinian solidarity work. 7-9pm, New World Resource
Center, 1300 N. Western Ave, one block north of Division and Roberto

Thur, August 7 - IPRAC Open House featuring 20 Years of Puerto Rican
Murals in Chicago by Marixsa Alicea of DePaul University. Also music,

promotion, integration and advancement of the Puerto Rican culture. 5:30

Peace Pledge-Chicago invites you to attend a discussion on gender and
the anti-war movement. Why are so many men viewed as "the experts" and
so many women "shy to speak" at rallies and conferences? What connection
exists between gender and militarism? How can we build a movement that
not only works to end U.S. militarism, but also promotes gender equality
as well? How did/do Bush and the administration use ideas about gender
to build support for their war? Come to a discussion among activists
about how these questions, and others that you may want to talk about.

Sat-Sun, August 16-17 - 10th Annual Air & Water Show Protest sponsored
by the 8th Day Center for Justice. The A&W show is essentially a
military commercial for recruiting, war and huge budgets. Gather with
banners and leaflets at the East end of the footbridge which crosses
Lake Shore Drive just North of North Ave., from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm both
days and spread the anti-war message as hundreds of thousands cross the
bridge to "enjoy" the wares of death paraded by the military as family
entertainment. Over two million come during the weekend, lining the
lakeshore from the Loop to Belmont. Numerous groups cosponsor and
advertise this annual protest. If you want your group to be listed as a

Sat, August 16 - Film: The Spook Who Sat By the Door. Free screening of
the legendary film suppressed by the U.S. government soon after its
release by United Artists in 1974. Based on the 1969 Sam Greenlee novel
about a token Black recruited by the CIA who later leaves to train young
Blacks for a Vietnam-era ghetto uprising in Chicago and other cities. 2
pm at the Chicago Public Library Bessie Coleman Branch, 731 E. 63rd St.
(across the street from the terminus of the 63rd St Green Line elevated,

Emergency Response Plan to War & Racism
Sponsored by the Chicago Coalition Against War & Racism


1. If the U.S. starts another full scale war on another country besides
Iraq, a protest will take place at 5 pm+ at the Federal Plaza, Adams &
Dearborn Streets, Chicago, the day the bombing begins. There will be a
larger follow up protest at the same time & place the day after.

2. In the event of a provocative attack on community leaders or
organizations in the Chicago area, CCAWR has constructed a phone tree to
mobilize the community to quickly protest the attack, whether at a
police station, federal government office, or other appropriate place.
